Munich to Paris Itinerary In June

Hello!
I am planning a 19-day trip for our family of four in June -- we fly into Munich and home from Paris. Would love advice on our draft itinerary below! Our kids are 10 and 12 - we don't want to pack too much in and run everyone ragged and are also looking for a balance of city sights and nature/countryside. I am also very interested in visiting Konigssee area but it doesn't feature too prominently on typical itineraries -- is it worth the extra time? Finally we plan to take the train to Paris and are wondering where would be the best City to pick up the train. I am assuming Stuttgart b/c there is a high-speed option but please advise if there is a better end-point in southern Germany. Finally any thoughts about adding and subtracting a day here and there, especially b/c Day 12 & 13 (below) feel a bit compressed. Thank you!

  • Day 1 -- Evening arrival Munich
  • Day 2 - Munich
  • Day 3 - Munich - would like to visit Dachau
  • Day 4 -Train to Salzburg
  • Day 5- Salzburg
  • Day 6 - Salzburg
  • Day 7 - Bus to Berchtesgaden / rent car/ stay near Konigssee
  • Day 8 - Stay a second night in Konigssee? Would like to take boat ride and visit salt mines
  • Day 9-11 - Drive to Fussen area to visit castles etc. What town/area makes best base? Ideally we could stay in a quiet, country location that is still convenient to castles and other sites (one of my children has requested a farm-like stay)
  • Day 12 --Drive Romantic Road and spend night in Rothenburg ?
  • Day 13 - Travel Day --Drive to Stuttgart, return car, take high speed train to Paris
  • Day 13 - Evening arrival in Paris
  • Day 14-18 - Paris
  • Day 19 - Fly home

Day 7 - Bus to Berchtesgaden / rent car/ stay near Konigssee

You have to pick up your car in Germany to avoid international one-way drop-off charges, but there is no need to go as far as Berchtesgaden. Salzburg has a suburb called Freilassing, just over the river in Germany. Might be more convenient to pick up the car there then drive to Berchtesgaden.

Day 9-11 - Drive to Fussen area to visit castles etc. What town/area makes best base? Ideally we could stay in a quiet, country location that is still convenient to castles and other sites (one of my children has requested a farm-like stay)

Stay in Füssen, or in a village nearby. I did a google for "Bauernhof ferien Füssen" (farm holiday Füssen) and got 3 sites:
https://www.fuessen.de/service/familie-fuessen/ferien-bauernhof.html (official Füssen town website)
http://www.ferienhofschneider.de/
https://www.bauernhofurlaub.de/bundeslaender/bayern/allgaeu/ostallgaeu/fuessen.html

Day 12 --Drive Romantic Road and spend night in Rothenburg ?

This can't be done in a day. You could drive direct to Rothenburg ob der Tauber using Autobahns. The Romantic Road isn't one road, and it isn't romantic. It is just a collection of local roads which join up a number of pretty romantic towns. If you are going to do this, stay in one of the other towns on the way. I like Dinkelsbühl.

Day 13 - Travel Day --Drive to Stuttgart, return car, take high speed train to Paris

Doesn't have to be Stuttgart, you can get connections into the Paris trains from anywhere. Würzburg is an option, at the end of the Romantic road, and worth a few hours.

Stuttgart has a few direct trains to Paris, with the most likely choices being around 9:00, 11:00, and 15:00; or you could catch the same trains a half hour later at Karlsruhe.

Frankfurt also has direct trains departing to Paris around 9:00, 13:00, and 17:00; or you could catch the same trains a half hour later at Mannheim.

We are going to Munich and Salzburg with our boys (15 and 11) over spring break. Some comments on that part of your itinerary:
a) depending on how late your arrival in Munich is, you may consider going straight to Salzburg. That save you a hotel move.
b) 2-3 full days in Salzburg may be much unless you include some day trips. With 3 nights in Salzburg, we are going to the salt mine in Hallein and Hohenwerfen as 2 half day trips as there is only so much Mozart my boys will take (and they are not SOM fans).
c) the film and guided tours at Dachau are for ages 14+. I would love to have included it as I have visited Auschwitz and understand the power of the memorials, but didn't want to have either myself or my husband miss it since our youngest didn't qualify. I don't know if the tour companies who run visits allow younger children or not.

Enjoy your trip!

We stayed near Oberammergau in a wonderful AirBnB. You'll find several options in that area to suit your needs.
Rather than touring Neuschwanstein, we elected to drive down the road to Tegelberg. We took the cable car to the top and spent the day hiking and watching the hang gliders and parasailers. It was an easy drive to Oberammergau. We spent a day on the Kolbensattel in Oberammergau. The kids LOVED the alpine slide and the zip line course too. in the evening, we could hear the cowbells ringing on the mountainside.

Our teenagers all say they would have loved to spend more time there.

I would recommend to stay overnight in Rothenburg - 95 % of the tourists are day tourists. After 5:30 pm, you will have the town to yourselves and it is just beautiful!

From Rothenburg to Stuttgart it's roughly a 2 hour drive, to Frankfurt, it's about the same. The bullet train from Frankfurt to Paris Gare de l'Est takes about 4 hours and leaves several times a day.
Enjoy your stay in Germany!
