Munich to Oberammergau/Ettal for Passion play next June

We are planning to travel independently to Oberammergau next summer for the Passion Play (ticket purchased already). Our hotel is in Ettal. Is it possible to go from Munich to the Neuschwanstein Castle/Linderhof to Ettal/Oberammergau via public transportation? We will have our travel backpacks with us.... Or would it be better to do the castles as a day trip then go on to Ettal on a different day?

I’m trying to figure out this exact question myself. I did notice there is an all day bus tour from Munich to Neuschwanstein that includes Oberammergau. I’m wondering if it would be possible to leave the tour in Oberammergau. I’ve also thought about spending the night in Fussen before heading to Oberammergau.

It was the Gray Line Tour mentioned in Rick’s Pocket Munich.

With your hotel in Ettal, you can have an easy half-day trip to Linderhof by using the public bus service. To my surprise Ettal also has some direct bus connections to Füssen for Neuschwanstein others involve a change between connecting busses.
Use the train-and-bus planner of the Deutsche Bahn to see what's feasible. The planner knows Linderhof as »Schloß Linderhof«. Ettal is a 1,5 hr journey from Munich (München) with a change of train to bus in Oberau. In Ettal the nearest bus stop for your hotel is probably »Klostergasthof Ettal«.

You can get to Füssen and Oberammergau by train. Buses of the RVO (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern, run by Deutsche Bahn) go between Füssen, Hohenschwangau, and Oberammergau, also Ettal, Linderhof, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The DB schedule website will show them all.

For those who understand German, the RVO website (www.rvo-bus.de) shows all of the bus routes and schedules.

Yes, you can get to the castles via public transport from Munich, but it actually is quite nice to have a car if you plan to stay in that area and travel around.
