My wife and I have a week to explore the region between Munich and Basel at the end of November, most likely without a car.
I think a couple of days at Bodensee, perhaps Konstanz, will be one of our goals. The rest of time is up for grabs. Considering the time of year, does anyone have some suggestions for other places to visit?
We have been to the Lauterbrunnan area, and Garmisch P-K region. Would Berchtesgaden be a possibility then? Perhaps other places in southern Germany, or Liechtenstein or northern Switzerland?
Any suggestions gratefully accepted!
Berchtesgaden is not between Munich and Basel, it is in the opposite direction.
Liechtenstein is indistinguishable from other parts of the eastern end of Switzerland in the Rhine Valley. The only reason to go there is to say you have been there. Otherwise a waste of time.

Check out Lindau. A cute little town; the harbor at Lindau is gorgeous. It's worth spending a day or two, at the least. Last time I was there we spend four nights, took a boat across the lake to Switzerland.

Not sure the ferry boats operate in November.
I don't think they do either. We were there in September, I think.
From Lindau it's about a half hour up to Friedrichshafen, where you can visit the Zeppelin Museum. Very interesting for technical geeks. Or go by train around to Bregenz, Austria, and go up the Pfänderbahn to a mountain top (the Pfänder) east of Bregenz from which you can see all the way down the Bodensee to Konstanz. From Lindau another neat trip is to go up to Immenstadt (back towards Munich), then take the train up to Oberstdorf, the second largest ski resort in Germany. From there you can take a bus up Kleinwalsertal, a beautiful Alpine valley that is technically in the Tirol but completely isolated from it by mountains and only accessible in the winter from Germany and in the summer via a foot path to Austria.
Thank you, Lee and Sam. I will look at the places you mentioned, they all sound interesting.
You can easily spend a week around the Bodensee (I have). Just remember to plan on rain and snow. Without a car I'd consider a route that runs Munich to Augsburg, then to Ulm, to Konstanz, and then fly out of Zurich. The nice part about this is all of these towns have things to see and do, they all have Christmas markets that will be open late Nov. and they're very easy to travel between without spending hours on the train.
Lichtenstein is not worth the effort, and hard to get to without a car. The ferries do run up and down the Bodensee in the winter, but the schedule changes. I don't know if I'd want to stay in Lindau come winter, but Konstanz is nice. I can recommend the Steigenberger.
