Munich stopover for Beer and train to Italy

Hey travelers, I am a novice traveler — need advice! We are meeting a group friends in Italy (they have made all the arrangements for Italy)
But my husband and I want to fly into Munich, find a place to stay for 2 nights ( moderate rates) drink some beer, recover, and take a train to Milan.
Fly into Munich September 20 ? Take train to meet up in Italy on 25 th .Hotel recomdations ( how to get there) and near a train station ? Any help is appreciated.

are you aware that you are arriving just at the kickoff of Oktoberfest and all that entails in crowds and hotel room costs?

FYI Lufthansa seems to be having a promotion where you can get a free stopover

As Nigel stated, your plan to arrive on September 20th coincides with the start of Oktoberfest on September 19th. If seeing Oktoberfest is part of you plan, then you are arriving at a great, but busy time. Prices for hotels in Munich skyrocket and the most convenient ones are often sold out well in advance.

We did a small group trip to Oktoberfest last year and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Munich City West. The price was reasonable and included breakfast. And we chose it because it is just two stops west of the main train station on multiple lines which made it convenient for both seeing the sites and visiting Oktoberfest. We will probably stay there in 2027 when we next return to Oktoberfest.

IMO Munich is a great town--with or without Oktoberfest crowds--and you may find yourself not seeing as much as there is to see with just two nights. Have you considered a night train from Munich to Milan to give yourself a bit more time in Munich?

Altering the plan very slightly, the question didn't specify any actual Munich locations other than the airport. So for beer, recovery and some bavarian atmosphere without the Okotberfest mayhem and prices try moving east slightly.

https://rosenheim.jetzt/en/tourist-information very easy to reach from the airport with value priced train tickets that don't need pre booking. I've just checked booking site www.hrs.com and the Holiday Inn Express 500metres from the railway station has double rooms with breakfast for €119. Interesting enough for this plan and smaller than Munich so easier on the brain if jet lagged. And the two hourly Munich - Italy direct trains call here about 50 minutes after leaving central Munich so easier on the next leg of the journey, total time to Milan is about 7 hours usually with a transfer in Verona. Tickets should be booked in advance www.bahn.com

If you wanted to add nights (since you aren't due in Milan until 25th) you can try a day in Munich when your brains have cleared, or go the other way and try a day in Salzburg. Or even a cog railway railway up their local mountain https://www.wendelsteinbahn.de/en/index
