Hi there, my wife and I (Canadian) are spending 4 or 5 nights in Munich this April as part of a trip throughout Germany. Any suggestions for a budget conscious stay that is fairly central and not too far from the main train station?
Thank you,
John
On our last 2 stays in Munich we stayed at the Mercure Hotel Munich Altstadt. It's about a km from the train station on wide sidewalks, and only 5 min from the Marienplatz Sbahn/Ubahn station. It's a smaller chain hotel, not fancy, but immaculate, on a very quiet side street, and helpful staff. Very good breakfast, too. Check the usual 3rd party booking sites as well as the hotel website for best prices.
Any of the Motel One locations. Public transportation is cheap and easy.
I stayed at Pension am Jakobplatz and liked it. Friendly owner. Great location -- 5 minute walk from Marienplatz and the Marienplatz U/S station. Prices on website. https://pension-jakobsplatz.de/en/
In the same building is Pension Lindner, which has been recommended multiple times on this forum. Prices are also on its website. http://www.pension-lindner.com/index1.htm
I like Motel One. It's a German chain of spotless, efficient hotels with tight rooms and great common areas. I like the chain a lot for short stays and have stayed with them in 6 cities. Again, rooms are small. There is not much space to hang clothes or even to store luggage. I think 4-5 days with a significant other in a small Motel One room (even if just for sleep) might make me a little batty. If you do choose Motel One, sign up for the Be One program (no cost) to get a free large bottle of water on arrival.
A tram ride away from the main station -- Hotel Brecherspitze, our Munich home
Very budget friendly, family-run, nice breakfasts. To lower your costs even more, ask for rooms with shared bath (a step back in time to hotels before "en suite bath" became the norm.)
I'd go for the Motel One-while the rooms are a bit small, you can get a balcony room on the top floor which is a bit bigger and has great views of Munich. For 4 nights it's doable.
We stayed at two places that fit the bill for you. Pension Linder was the first one, where we stayed for 5 nights. Absolutely loved it!!! Great location, very clean and well kept rooms, excellent breakfast, and very reasonable rates. We also stayed at the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt for one night and it had all the same pros as PL. PL had more charm though, vs being more modern/sterile. That truly is the only difference that we noticed, and we would stay at either of these again in a heartbeat.
Thank you everyone!
I love the motel one chain (have stayed there in several German cities and Vienna), but as one of the previous posters stated, its really tight for more than one person. They're great for my solo travel, but if I was going with someone would probably choose a different hotel. Their closet space is fine for one but could strain a relationship!
Right across from the main train station is aLoft, which I have used and like. It's a very quick walk from there to the city center.
