That "spring festivcal" is but an infelicitous miniatur copy of the Oktoberfest and not worth a detour. A much more traditional Volksfest is the Auer Dult (Marianhilfplatz), 19.4. - 7.5.

I very much enjoy the Fruhlingsfest! It's a very scaled down version of the Oktoberfest with only 2 beer tents. There are fewer tourists but the same food, music, and of course, beer! I always stay at the Hotel Uhland which is a stone's throw from the festival grounds. Have a liter of Augustinerbrau for me!

Frühlingsfest is great. My family went every year when we lived there. As others have said, it's like a mini Oktoberfest but without the large crowds and drunken tourists. Think of it like it county or a small state fair with carnival rides, food booths and beer.

Auer Dult is also worth a visit but it's more of a crafts/odds-n-ends market (ive been several times). It's a good place to pick up a unique souvenir. I have some storage crocks for potatoes and garlic from there. My father pick up an old pocket knife.

You can easily hit both in one day.

Thanks everyone, we'll be there April 26 to May 1 so I'm thinking we have time to get out of town. We'll be heading to Salzburg from Munich so any other recommendations for day trips is appreciated. I have Rick's pocket Munich which of course recommends Neuschwanstein Castle but anything else would be appreciated as well.

One year, we left Munich and spent time at Dachau before an overnight at Andechs to visit the monastery and have some of their extraordinary beer. The next morning we traveled to Herrenchiemsee and toured the palace, before heading into Salzburg. The first night in Salzburg we enjoyed the evening at the Augustiner Braustubl. Great food and really tasty beer. A good day trip from Salzburg is the town of Hallstatt. The bone chapel is cool. From there, a short drive around the lake and you can take the cable car up the Dachstein Mountain and visit the ice cave. I don't think the 5 fingers lookout will be open yet, but the ice cave was cool!
