Munich sites and day trips advice

We have 4days in mid-September with Munich as a home base. Thinking will want to see BMW Welt and day trip to Neuschwanstein. Other recommendations? We are 2 couples in early 60s with interests in hiking, gardens/scenery for photography and beer gardens.
Thanks in advance!

Beer, hiking, scenery, possibly photography... Andechs Monastery / Brewery / Biergarten is your place. Take the S-Bahn to the town of Herrsching, a small town on the Ammersee (Ammer Lake,) from Central Munich and do the uphill hike to the facility. Nice views of the lake and countryside on the hike. Rick's book on Germany has hiking details.

You'll find trail advice for Herrsching > Andechs at the page below if you don't have Rick's book:

Dachau is a very worthwhile day trip and easy to get to from Munich. The BMW musuem is nice too.

Let me start right away with my favorite topic. Nothing is as Munich as a beer garden :-)

My favorite in one of my favorite Munich districts (Haidhausen): Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz: https://www.munich.travel/en/pois/eat-drink/hofbraeukeller

Of course Augustiner Keller, Arnulfstr. 52: https://www.munich.travel/en/pois/eat-drink/tapped-from-wooden-barrels

You could combine the beer garden in the English Garden (Chinese Tower) with a visit of the famous Eisbach surfers and a hike through the parc (https://www.munich.travel/en/pois/sports-leisure/english-garden). It's a really big park and while it's still a typical city park near the city center it is more and more wilderness the further north you go. On the way there are a few other beer gardens besides the Chinese Tower. And it is a great spot for photos.

Because we are talking about hiking, in the Nymphenburg Palace Parc you can still see deer and other animals early in the morning. When you are there, there will definitely be some ground fog in the morning and you can take fantastic photos. The park is also big so you can easily spend a few hours strolling around. You can check out my photos if you want: https://www.flickr.com/photos/calabrones/albums/72157648888753959

Another big parc is the Olympic Parc near BMW World/Museum.

Weihenstephan / Freising -- beer garden on the top of the hill at the Technical University, oldest brewery in the world, great views, and at the edge of their botanical garden.

They used to have a beer garden just on the north side of Freising in the woods. Plantage, I think. I hope it's still there. Very pretty area.

The town of Freising is worth seeing, and it is the seat of the diocese--the Frauenkirche in Munich belongs to Freising, not the other way around.

I whole heatedly agree with what everyone else has said. If you really want to do some hiking, hike up to Eagles Nest. A great hike and views.

Check this out...

From Munich, we used Mike's Bike Tours and did a tour to Neuschwanstein. It was really nice as the first stop was in a little town where we got bikes, and we rode out to Swan Lake (think that is the name of it), then had lunch, then headed up to Neuschwanstein. Our adult kids were with us and all of us thoroughly enjoyed this day. Another day we just rented bikes from Mike's and rode all the way through, and past, the English Gardens. It was really nice to have no agenda and just ride and stop when we wanted. Dachau was another day trip we did. We just took the train and did not join any organized tour.

I always enjoy taking a day trip to Salzburg as I buy the Bayern Ticket. There are several other cities you can go to with this ticket, the rest are in Bavaria. the cost is under 30 euros for the 1st traveler and about 8 euros each for the next up to four people.

Below is their website:

Also, consider a day trip by train to Augsburg. It was founded over 2000 years ago and is very historic.

Tram #17 in front of the Hbf takes you to Schloss Nymphenburg which is fun to tour. Nearby is the Hirschgarten (largest beer garden in the world) and on the return to the Hbf you pass the Augustiner Keller (2nd largest beer garden in the world).
