From what you are planning with 10 people (any kids? ages?) you might want to rent cars in Feilassing, Germany, just outside Salzburg. Be sure to buy short term Austrian vignettes for the cars (cheap). Then you can get to these out-of-the-way places you have chosen to stay in Austria, make a trip to Hallstatt simpler. Drop the cars in Fuessen, then proceed by train to Oberwesel, or keep the cars and drive to Frankfurt and drop the cars there before proceeding to Oberwesel.

I notice you are taking the Westbahn train to Salzburg. Have you bought tickets? You can travel on almost the same schedule with a regional train using two 5-person Bayern Tickets. Plus the regional train stops at Freilassing, while the Westbahn train does not. The Bayern Tickets will cost you 138 EUR, or 13.80 EUR per person.

Is this a tour group, or are you creating this itinerary? It’s moving awfully fast. You are staying in several very remote areas. With a large group, this is going to be challenging and time consuming. I’m just guessing here, but are your overnights in Adnet and Kleinstochach based on cheap rentals? When traveling by public transportation, there is value in being closer to transportation options.

There is a direct train from Oberwessel to Frankfurt airport in 1hr3min. If your flight isn’t too early, you could skip sleeping in Frankfurt and use that extra night somewhere else. I would add it to Salzburg.

Are you basing in Klienstockach for nights 6-8? If so, you’ll probably want vehicles. This looks like a remote area. Personally, I would not choose such a remote place without a car.

We are creating itinerary, not a tour group, all family ages 20 to 62. Stays are all home rentals besides Frankfort. Thankyou for the info and suggestions No transportation booked but lodging is booked

The regional train from Munich to Salzburg (or Freilassing) that matches your desired departure time is at 9:55 am from Munich Hbf and arrives Salzburg Hbf at 11:42. You do not have to book this train in advance, you can just buy Bayern Tickets day of travel.

I have not been to Halstatt so can’t specifically comment, but I will say we really loved Salzburg. We followed a similar plan from Munich, arriving at the same time and exploring that day, plus all of the following day. It was enough time to wander and explore the city, and spend time at some of the sites like Hellbrunn Palace (so worth it!) and go up the funicular to the Fortress. Both really terrific experiences I’d highly recommend! We could not have fit it all into just the one partial day.

Oct 2 Munich Haufbrau House Dinner

Alternate recommendation: Augustiner Keller. Easy to get to (block away from Haupbahnof), better beer and food (subjective, I know)

Oct 8 Castles at Fussen Oct 9 Travel to Oberwessel-stay at Castle

That's a nearly 5 hour drive.

Do you have a tent reservation or plan for Oktoberfest? I ask as a follow-up to @nixit71's comment regarding the Haufbrau House. Specifically, don't drink the same beer three nights in a row. Try to expereince three different breweries while in Munich.

Agree. We actually went into Haufbrau House with the intention of having dinner but every seat was filled and there were people standing in the courtyard waiting for tables, so we went across the street to Ayinger. Wasn't disappointed. They had an awesome lager from the wooden barrel. Only offered after 6pm and when I wanted a second, they were already out.

I really enjoyed "Keller" type beers across Bavaria. I don't think I had one bad beer in all Germany. From altbier in Dusseldorf to kolsch in Cologne (maybe the most refreshing variety) to Bavaria.

@Nixit71, this is the undiscovered country of German beers. Keller (celler) beers are fantastic. Next trip to Germany, go to Forscheim, it's the keller bier capital of Bavaria.
