Munich-Salzburg-Vienna travel in December

Hello!
My husband and I and our three adult kids will be traveling to Germany and Austria in December. We are all active, love to travel and want to see a many sites as possible. A plus will be visiting Christmas markets in the evenings. (But not every night if we need a break or rest from a busy day!)
I have studied countless itineraries and have read many suggestions and comments which led me to come up with this general travel itinerary:

Day 1: Fly to Munich, arrive in the afternoon

Day 2: Munich (stay overnight) - visit Dachau, Christmas markets in the evening

Day 3: Munich (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 4: Munich (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 5: Munich (stay overnight) - day trip to Regensburg - museums/sites/markets

Day 6: Munich (stay overnight) - day trip to Nuremberg - museums/sites/markets

Day 7: Leave Munich, take train to Salzburg early morning (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 8: Salzburg (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 9: Leave Salzburg, take train to Vienna late morning or early afternoon (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 10: Vienna (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 11: Vienna (stay overnight) - museums/sites/markets

Day 12: Fly out of Vienna for travel back home

Here are my questions:

1) Does this itinerary sound reasonable and doable?

2) Should we not take day trips from Munich back to back? (Visit Regensburg on Day 4, stay in Munich on Day 5, visit Nuremberg on Day 6, then travel to Salzburg on Day 7.)

3) Should we visit Rothenburg rather than Nuremberg? (I have heard they are both amazing, but different, and I am tortured by which one we should see!)

4) Is there a way of visiting Regensburg, Nuremberg AND Rothenburg? Or is that just too ambitious for one trip....

Thank you so very much for your help, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it! :)

we go over yearly for the Xmas Markets. You are seeing some of our favorites.
If you want a guide for Dachau, we love bighattours.com --- he also does a great Third Reich Tour of Munich.
There are 3 markets in Munich very close to Marienplatz - the main one, the Residenz one, the Medieval one

Regensburg is one of our favs - be sure to get tickets to the Private Market at Thurn & Taxis Market - I don' think the Palace is worth touring, but the market around the Palace is one of our favs in all of Europe, you'll see things/items there you won't see anywhere else. The town is also amazing as it wasn't destroyed in WW2, so it's all original. Def explore the town. The main market near the Cathedral is only ok - focus on the town and the Thurn and Taxis Market - it is stunning at night as they light lots of fires - get there around 3 so you can see it at day and night. We get tickets online before we go.

Nuremberg is another favorite and I think both Regensburg and Nuremberg need more than one day personally. So much to see and explore. The Market is Nuremberg is huge and there are 3 amazing cathedrals and half-timbered homes and bridges

Salzburg def another fav and I'm glad you're spending the night there. Be sure and find all the markets as 1 is tucked away.

Rothenburg is pretty - but the market is SMALL and it is a hard town to get to with train changes, etc - skip it. Personally I'd spend the night in Nuremberg and Regensburg as they need time. We love Hotel Victoria in Nuremberg. But lots of city changes is hard too. I think you could do less in Munich as you can see the 3 markets in ONE day easily as they are so close and the Residenz and Medieval ones are tiny and can be seen quickly. Don't miss the 2 cathedrals in Munich (one near Marienplatz St. Peters and the yellow one across from the Residenz market Theatine Church.

Vienna - amazing also. Def see St. Stephan's Cathedral and take the elevator to the top for amazing views. As far as Markets, don't miss the one at St. Stephans, Spittelberg Market, Maria Theresa Platz Market, Art Advent Market (Locals fav), Rathaus Market/City Hall - esp see at night, and the one at Schonbrunn Palace is amazing with products as good as the ones at the Regensburg Thurn and Taxis market.

My only suggestion is to be flexible regarding which days you plan to day-trip from Munich. Museums don't care about the weather. City walks and Christmas Markets do.

Six nights in Munich? I guess you have your time well planned and it works for your interests. 2 nights in Vienna? I'm not even a big fan of Vienna and I would not go for less than four nights. Salzburg I haven't been to .... yet ... go in about 2 weeks. 2 or 3 nights sounds about right based on my interests.

I also think you have too many nights in Munich. We are also doing a trip in December. Will be spending 3 nights in Nuremberg with one day trip to Regensberg. Rothenburg and Nuremberg are very different. Nuremberg is much bigger and has so many WWII sites along with a castle and lots of historic buildings / bridges. Rothenburg is much smaller and is a really neat medieval village. I love both. I think it really depends on which one sounds more appealing to you. When we travel I try to mix up big cities and small villages.

I don’t know if you need timed entries for Dachau or if you are going to do a tour, but I would move this to Day 3 or further out. Since it will be December there may be delays due to weather so I’d make Day 2 activity something flexible and untimed.
