Munich/Salzburg/Fussen area

Hi all,

I'll be traveling with my family of 4 in June, and we're trying figure out how to allocate our time. We'll fly into Munich and would like to see Salzburg as well as the Neuschwanstein Castle area. We'd like to do a mix of bigger city and small town, so we'd like to spend a night or two outside of Munich. Any recommendations on charming smaller towns to stay in with good access to the castles? I've heard mixed reviews on staying in Fussen. We are planning on traveling primarily by rail and so will not have a car.

Thank you.

My favotite little walled town is Rothenburg, just beautiful. I believe its on the
Romantic Road. We stayed in Rothenburg for two nights.
Near Neuschweinstein, during the summer, is a summer luge ride. Rick mentions it
in his books. We did the castle and luge ride in a day and drove to Rothenburg for dinner and
our hotel. Linderhof Castle is in that area too. We stopped there too, but on our way back to Munich.

Salzburg is great, going to Hallstatt is cool too. The lake there is so cute.
In Salzburg, we visited the fortress and town. Plus, a little Sound of Music.
Our family also enjoyed a tour of a salt mine in Hallstatt area.

We Stayed in Salzburg for 2 nights.

Enjoy your adventure!

Please! Pay attention to spelling. Are you deliberately trying to insult Germans? Schwein is pig in German; Schwan is swan. That beautiful castle is Neu·schwan·stein, new swan mountain, not new pig mountain.

Two small towns, short bus rides from Hohenschwangau, the village below the castles, are Oberammergau and Pfronten. I've stayed in both. Charming towns and not far from Füssen.

"...we'd like to spend a night or two outside of Munich."
That's all? Not sure how many days you have. Munich is a nice city but in many ways just another big city as well. Most of it was of course destroyed 70+ years (WW II) ago and rebuilt. You'll find Bavaria full of places that retain their old-world charm - but you need to get away from Munich for more than a few hours.

There are many places in Bavaria to rub elbows with nothing but tourists, some of those already mentioned.

Consider some of these options where Germans are more numerous, all easy to reach by train.

Two UNESCO World Heritage old towns:
Bamberg
Regensburg

Burghausen (castle complex)
Mittenwald (Alpine town)

Nördlingen

The Bad Windsheim Open-air Museum (Freilandmuseum)

Main River towns near Würzburg:
Ochsenfurt
Marktbreit
