Munich- Salzburg- Berlin-Munich Trip (solo)

Hello,

Since researching about Munich and nearby cities, i've decided on below route to take. My trip is kind of tied up because my arrival and departure is Munich and i have to be in Munich midway for the Coldplay concert. I'm the type of traveller who has this specific places/ stuff that is a must-do and all the rest will be flexible. Here's my itinerary:

June 2- early morning arrival in Munich. then 2 hours allowance for luggage and immigration. Afterwhich, take Flixbus for Salzburg.
Will arrive there in the afternoon. head to accommodation then just explore the city.
June 3- will be 9am-5pm day tour , doing the Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour.
At night, will take a train to Berlin. Is the train price really around 139 eur? I couldn't find a cheaper rate. Please guide me on this. And it's more than 12hr trip right?
June 4- arrival in Berlin, go straight for the Devil's bridge. I was trying to look for a tour to take me to Devil's Bridge, i couldn't find one. Do you have any suggestion? I really want to see the bridge. Will spend a night at Bad Muskau for relaxation since it's "spa town"
June 5- early morning trip to Berlin. How? Once i arrive there, i'll do the city tour on my own ( will do further research, since info on berlin tour is readily available online). Take a night train again, this time for Munich so i'll arrive there morning of June 6
June 6-10- Munich. For Munich, all i want to do are: Coldplay concert, Neuschwanstein Castle and the Englischer Garten.

Can you please help me with the transportation for Munich-Salzburg-Berlin-Munich. If it's doable.
Thank you so much!

PS. I'll be travelling solo so renting a car is really beyond my budget.
Thank you so much!

Ivy

Where did you search? A quick look at www.bahn.de brings up fares starting from €79. There are, however, no direct night trains Salzburg - Berlin. Do you really want to transfer to one or two other trains in the middle of the night? Flights from Salzburg for your date start from €59.

thank you for your reply @sla019. I really really appreciate it!

I was looking at the same site last night. I might have focused on the flexpreis rate. I didn't even notice that there's a need to change train. I can't change trains at night, might not be good. I think i'll have to revise my plan. But i have to make it work between June 2-5. I have to be in Munich on the 6th for Coldplay.

Thank you again!

What do you mean by "devil's bridge"? I've never heard a place called that near Berlin. A bit of web searching suggests that there is one so-called in Glienicke Park near Wannsee. It's close to the much more famous bridge in the area, the Glienicke Bridge on the road between Wannsee and Potsdam, which was on the border between West Berlin and East Germany during the partition era and was famously used for several prisoner exchanges.

You can reach the area by bus from Wannsee or tram from central Potsdam, after travelling to either location from central Berlin on the S-Bahn train.

When we hit the ground after a long flight, we take it very easy--usually taking a nap the first afternoon before going out. We certainly don't take another trip on day one.
Would you be open to an optional city that's easier and quicker to get to--instead of Berlin?
Many people take the train from Munich to Salzburg. Then, the same train line takes you straight into Vienna--another great large European city. It's a straight shot back into Munich. Or, you can go by train from Salzburg to Budapest. Both Vienna and Budapest are two of our favorite large cities.
Your time is relatively short on the ground, and you really need to spend enough time in each city to see it right.

June 2- early morning arrival in Munich. then 2 hours allowance for luggage and immigration. Afterwhich, take Flixbus for Salzburg.

Please note that there are few Flixbus connections between Munich Airport and Salzburg. While preebooked Flixbus tickets are cheaper as a Bayern Ticket (€25), if your flight is delayed your Flixbus ticket will be worthless. A Bayern Ticket is valid for any regional train on the day of issue. Just get it from a ticket machine in the Central Area (right and left of the DB counter), take the S8 to Munich East (München Ostbahnhof) and transfer there to a Meridan bound for Salzburg.

June 4- arrival in Berlin, go straight for the Devil's bridge. I was trying to look for a tour to take me to Devil's Bridge, i couldn't find one. Do you have any suggestion? I really want to see the bridge.

Not sure which bridge you are referring to. There used to be a »Teufelsbrücke«, a late Romantic historistic bulding in the Glienicker Park, but according to this website (in German) it collapsed a couple of years ago and access has been blocked since. It's certainly not worth your precious time.

For Munich, all i want to do are: Coldplay concert, Neuschwanstein Castle and the Englischer Garten.

You are aware that Neuschwanstein is not in Munich? It is in Schwangau, which is 2 hours from Munich by train to Füssen, then a further 30 minutes by bus to Schwangau.

Hi,

From Salzburg you can take a night train to Berlin...two ways. Take a day train Salzburg to Munich so that you get in before 1900 (when night trains start). You take the Munich to Hannover night train, which arrives after 0600 or so. Then take the ICE to Berlin.

The other way from Salzburg is take a train to Linz, where after 1900 the night to Hannover will stop. From Linz it's direct shot to Hannover where you transfer to Berlin. That night route I'm doing on my trip in June from Austria to Berlin via Hannover, same days as you.

Distance wise Linz is closer to Salzburg. I'm well familiar with both train stations, but of course, Munich Hbf has way, way more to offer now that the Bahnhofspassage is complete, either way you need to go to Hannover to transfer to Berlin. The transfer times are not inconvenient

Devil's Bridge? Perhaps you meant the Glienecker Brücke, aka, the Bridge of Spies?

There's also a Teufelsgrabenbrücke in Pottsdam-Bornstedt, but it looks like a completely ordinary bridge, and the German Wikipedia article doesn't have much to say about it.

@David - i'm used to travelling/moving around the first day :) One of the reasons i want to go to Berlin is that it's the more popular city here in my country. It's like when we speak of Germany, the more known city that would pop out is Berlin. And because i really want to see the Devil's bridge: https://fiveplustwoblog.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/rakotzbrucke-the-devils-bridge/
However, if the trip to Berlin, given the short period of time, is borderline impossible, i might go to Budapest. I'll search on this further.
Thank you so much!

@Tom - I'm referring to rakotzbrucke bridge. Here's the site about it: https://fiveplustwoblog.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/rakotzbrucke-the-devils-bridge/

@sla019 - thanks! my time of arrival is 7:05am, and the flixbus i'm planning to take is at 9:30. But i'll take note of your suggestion re Bayern ticket. I didn't understand how it works at first. Is this the website for Bayern Ticket? http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/en?ld=15049&country=GBR&rt=1&OK#focus

For the bridge, i'm referring to this one: https://fiveplustwoblog.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/rakotzbrucke-the-devils-bridge/
Thank you so much!

It looks like the bridge you referred to is in a park in the town of Gablenz, a 2.5-3.5 hour train ride away from Berlin in Landkreis Görlitz, Saxony. If you can understand German, here's the article about the park on Wikipedia. I seriously doubt you'll find a tour from Berlin that will take you there.

@Chris F - Yes. But there are lots of tours going there originating from Munich :)

@Fred - "The other way from Salzburg is take a train to Linz, where after 1900 the night to Hannover will stop."
I take that one is possible for me. On that day, i have day tour from 9-5, so train time will be after that. Will you be buying the ticket in advance, online? thank you so much!

@Tom - thank you so much! that makes searching about it easier. And the time travel is not that long, so it's very much possible for me!

@ Ivy...You're welcome. Re: that bridge it's not hard to get to the town of Cottbus, which I passed through once in 2001 coming on the train from Poland. Take the train from Berlin Hbf to Cottbus.

Re: the night train to Berlin via Hannover which stops at Linz is very doable. It starts at Wien Hbf. I stay at Wien Westbahnhof, so I'm catching that night train at St. Pölten instead. I use a rail Pass but will get a seat reservation at Westbahnhof. Even at the earliest, if you don't stop for breakfast (I do) when the train stops at Hannover Hbf., you should calculate on arriving in Berlin Hbf ca. 1000-1030. I know Hannover Hbf and some of the hotels close by, ie ca 3-5 mins, for a leisurely breakfast.

Is this the website for Bayern Ticket?

Please read through this website, which has all you need to know

BTW, don't pre-book (as suggested by the web site), since it's non-refundable. Simply buy on the spot from a ticket machine. First set it to English. Than, case you can't see a button "Bayern Ticket", press "All offers". You can use it from 9:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends.
Using that ticket you could, e.g., make an intermediate stop at lake Chiemsee to see Herrnchiemsee, one of the castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria.

Hi,

Part 2 here....No, you can get a cheaper price than the 109 Euro listed. I wouldn't go the Salzburg to Berlin route since I'm picky on transfer times if need be, plus that route goes back to Wien Hbf for you to change trains.

The Linz to Hannover cost 39 Euro for a seat; if you want to lock it in, which means you need to get from Salzburg to Linz, a bit over one hour, ie, no need going to Munich. This price, the adv. discount price, is a train and date/departure specific one. Keep in mind that by 0500 it'll be day light in June. Arrival in Hannover hbf just prior to 0700 is just right.
