Munich Residenz

I will greatly appreciate tips on a time-efficient visit to the Residenz.

Unfortunately I cannot spend more than three hours over there, so any shortcuts to see just the highlights will help me a lot. Thank you in advance.

The Schatzkammer (treasury room) is attached to the Residenz but with a separate entrance as I remember. It is filled with knick knacks that only kings could afford. It represents 3 centuries of collecting by the rulers of Bavaria. The visit took a relatively small amount of time.

The Residenz itself was overwhelming to my taste. Michelin says to allow 1/2 day. Unless you are really into Baroque decoration (over and over), I would consider giving it a miss.

I am sure others loved it.

Both the Residenz and Treasury have a huge amount of stuff to see and an over-the-top audio guide that covers hours of information. We actually did the two parts of the building on separate half days when we went a few years ago. You can get "highlights" folders (and I was actually thinking that there was a highlights section for this site in the Rick Steves Germany guide, but I may be remembering wrong), but you can also just prioritize the things you are most interested in. We did the Treasury first because we were interested in all the silver, crystal, crowns, art pieces, collectibles and so forth, but you can certainly walk past those if the rooms and architecture and decoration of the palace actually interest you more. Even if you can spend only a few hours, this is a fabulous place and well worth going to however much of it you can get to. My best advice: don't fall prey to the audio guide and get bogged down in TMI on every object or room.
