Munich <-> Prague, the good and the bad

There used to be direct ALX trains from Munich to Prague with a border crossing at Furth im Wald . They took about 6 hours and ran four times a day, each way, starting early morning to afternoon (the 3rd train of the day left Munich about noon). In Germany they were designated ALX; after Furth, they were either EX or EC. If they were EX, you could use a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket to Pilsen and buy a local ticket from there to Prague for just over 4€ (in Kc). However, if they ran in Czechia as EC, you could not use the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket beyond Furth. You could still use a Bayern-Ticket to Furth, but would need a Czech ticket from there to Prague.

Things have changed this year. First (the good), the Prague train now runs every two hours, from about 4:43 to 16:44, and the Czech part is now an EX, which means the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket is usable to Pilsen. However (the bad), the trains do not run every day. They don't run from March 1 to May 30. They do run in June and July (until the 27th), then not in August until Sept 11.

During March, April, May, and August the AXL train only runs to Nyrany. It stops in Domazlice, where you can catch an OS to Pilsen, so you can use the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket to Pilsen.

Leaving from Munich, the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket can only be used after 9 am workdays, but the 8:43 train gets to Freising after 9, so you can buy an MVV ticket to Freising and use the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket from there on.

That's simply because there are maior constructions works on the (single track) line between the Bavarian / Czech border and Plzen and again beyoned Plzen till Rokycany. There are regular substitute buses for the gap, see

(scroll down for info in English).
And there is an easy workaround for the 9am restriction: buy a Europa First ticket from the E-shop of the CD (ca €15).
