My husband and I will be driving through Germany in August 2017. We would rather not drive into Munich. Are there parking places just outside of the city, where a rental car can be left for 4-5 days?

Parking in and around Munich is extremely difficult in my experience. Rather than paying to park a rental car (the lot plus the cost of the car) why not just return it and get a new one when you are finished seeing the city?

One possibility would be to park in Moosach, which is on the way in from the airport as I recall. I don't know which ones would have parking for 4-5 days but you could check the websites for car parks listed here.
Some hotels in Munich may also offer parking. Check the RS Germany guidebook.

Yes, of course. Every German city has got Park And Ride car parks with direct access to the public transport.
