Munich or Frankfurt Airport to USA

Ending a river cruise in Nuremberg in Sept’18. Which airport do you recommend for direct flights back to USA? Also, how mych time to allow for transport to airport, queung through security? Not familiar with either airport. ( Note: Traveling with someone who will need wheelchair assist.) Thank you.

Frankfurt is bigger probably has more options where you can get direct flights closer to your home in the USA.
What city are you trying to get to from Frankfurt?
I would get to the airport 3 hours before the flight.

One factor to consider- non stop
I would pick Frankfurt as there is a non stop to Seattle but it depends on if there is one to your final destination.
I've traveled through both and did not notice a difference in queung through security but that can change day to day.
If you have time to spend in each city - Munich
Enjoy

Will this be booked as a one-way flight? Some airlines have one-way pricing ( Norwegian, Condor, Icelandair, etc.) while most of the traditional carriers ( Delta, United, American, etc.) will often charge more for one-way than round trip.

And what city in the US will you be flying back to?

Does it have to be nonstop? Nuremberg has its own airport, and the advantage of flying out of there (which will require a connection to get back to the US) is that you can arrange assistance with every step of the process (i.e., once at Nuremberg airport, changing planes in Frankfurt, and on arrival in the US). Nuremberg airport itself is small and easy to manage. Once you check your bags in Nuremberg, the airline handles them all the way to the US. And getting from the Nuremberg dock or city center to the Nuremberg airport is just a taxi ride. But if you fly out of Munich or Frankfurt, you have to get yourself - and your luggage - from Nuremberg to one of those airports on your own.

Yes, if you tell us where your ultimate US destination is, people can give more tailored advice. Frankfurt is larger and has more flights to more places. I find it very efficient, but some have complaints. Munich airport is smaller, which is great, unless that means it doesn't have nonstop flights to your home city.

To see where you can fly nonstop from an airport, look at that airport's Wikipedia page. Here's Frankfurt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations

and Munich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations

I'd like to second that. The people at the Nürnberg airport will be happy to assist you at no cost: https://www.airport-nuernberg.de/barrier-free-travel-5d44314158c1f1a5

The taxi ride takes approx. 20min and will be definitely cheaper than a train ticket to Frankfurt.

Fortunately, I am flying to the east coast of USA (IAD in Washington, DC) so there are non-stops out of both airports. (Flying from IAD ten days earlier, to Budapest, where the river cruise begins.) I gather both MUC and FRA are equidistant from Nuremberg and I can hire a private shuttle. My mother is elderly/wheel chair assist so the easier way for me to get her settled in a plane back home, the better.

Thank you to you all who took time to reply. You have been very helpful! Safe travels where ever your next journey takes you!

MUC is closer to Nürnburg than FRA and it’s much more populated that direction to FRA. Mostly open fields south to MUC.

Travel time from the dock to Frankfurt is approx. 2:30, to MUC 1:30. You should arrive at the airport 3 hours prior to departure.

To make the transport of your mother as convenient as possible Id' suggest to contact service people early. For MUC you can find infos here.

Like others said, MUC is closer. I’d also add that with Frankfurt being a much older airport is much more crowded with narrower passages and longer walking distances than the newer layout of MUC.

I’ve traveled with someone mobility impaired in both airports and MUC was MUCH easier to navigate.

Both FRA and MUC are among the world’s largest airports and both well equipped to provide help with passengers who need mobility assistance. Frankfurt’s big advantage is that there is a Deutsche Bahn train station in the airport at the lower level. Munich’s Hauptbahnhof is a 25-30 minutes trip by S Bahn or an expensive fare if you choose a taxi.

I find the Munich airport to be more approachable, easier to get around, than Frankfurt. If I had a choice with non-stop from either city, I would choose Munich.

Hi,

I read in a travel magazine a few years back that listed MUC as one of the "best" airports in the world, top ten, however that is defined. At that time I had not been to MUC, knew nothing of the place. Because of a family emergency in 2013, I flew back from MUC to SFO, my first time there, I was impressed.

If the price re. FRA and Munich is the same back to the USA, plus decent dep times/ arrival times and non-stop to the home airport, I would pick MUC.

Nurenburg is close to Munich and a short train ride there. Also, Bavaria had much to see, if you stay in Germany longer.

Your airline connections may be different, but there used to be direct flights from Atlanta to Munich on Delta.
