Munich on May Day

Our first day of a ten day jaunt through Germany is May 1, in Munich. I've figured out which sites and museums are open (almost none) but I'm just curious what the vibe will be like. Are shops and restaurants typically open? Are the beer gardens mobbed? Any tips? Crowds stress me out a bit but if it can't be helped...

May Day is an official German holiday so all stores will be closed. Restaurants will be open. Surprised that the museums are closed in Munich. Have you checked their websites? The museums in Frankfurt are open on 1 May.

All shopping in the city will be closed. Most restaurants will be open. Beer gardens will be mobbed if the sun is out, but that's normal on a Sunday in May.

The Auer Dult will be going on at Mariahilfplatz and May 1st is the final day of Frühlingsfest. If Frühlingsfest is too full, you could walk over to the beer garden at the Wirsthaus am Bavariapark, behind the statue of Bavaria, where they will be putting up the largest May pole in Munich.

The art museums (my personal priority) are all closed on Labor Day, and then all but Neue Pinakothek are closed on Monday, our only other day in Munich. The Residenz is open.

Check those museums, because normally when a holiday falls on a Monday, the museums are open and not closed as usual.

Even if the beer gardens are mobbed, it shouldn't feel all that hectic and stressful the way crowds usually do. Beer gardens by nature are pretty relaxed with a nice feeling of camaraderie.
