Munich,Oberammergau, Salzberg

Yes, we are adding the Passion Play to the trip. And yes, Saltzburg, Austria. Thank you.

Renting a car but would travel to Austria by train.

Any suggestions for a 10 day itinerary in the summer of 2020 to include, Munich, Oberammergau, Garmish-Partenkirchen, Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Saltzberg. Thank you.

Are you putting the Passion Play in the mix?

I think you mean Salzburg, Austria. There are places called Salzberg (not Saltzberg), but those won't get you to the right place.

You know, I'm not trying to be evasive, but what you should do is such a personal decision for you. You should not leave it to another person.

I, personally, love Munich, which is kind of incongruous for me, since I generally don't like big cities. Munich, somehow, is different. So I love Oberammergau and Rothenburg odT, but I am not so fond of Garmisch and Salzburg. But you might not feel the same. Research all of the venue, see what there is that you want to see. Then design your own itinerary.

However, just for a first cut, I think five places in ten days is a bit too intense.

These places are all close enough together that you can look at a map and figure out the reasonable order in which to do them. But it makes a difference if you are planning to drive or use public transportation.

These are wonderful places. I suggest starting in Munich, then head to Salzburg (also Berchtesgaden, Germany), then to Garmisch/Fussen then follow the Romantic Road to see Oberammergau. We saw the Passion Play, but it only comes up once in 10 years.

Stop in Augsburg and see the Rathaus and Fuggeri (don't miss it) for an afternoon. Head up the Romantic Road, visiting Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen before you get to Rothenberg ob der Tauber. Dinkelsbuhl is an intact medieval walled city like Rothenburg, without all the crowds. Nordlingen was built on a meteorite crater with its walls standing on the crater's edge.
