Munich-Nurnberg-Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Hi - I would love some feedback from folks who have taken an early train to Nuremberg for the day and then to Rothenberg in the late afternoon/eve and spending a night there before taking the train back to Munich the next day? There seems to be frequent departures. Any issues with the early or later train times? Pro's/Cons to the approach?

Thanks

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. You can travel on a Bayern ticket starting 9 am on local transport (no ICE), spend 5 1/2 hours in Nuremberg, then continue on to Rothenburg arriving 5:49 pm. The Bayern ticket is 23 euro for the first person and 4 euro pp after that up 4 more people. If you travel on the weekend, you can start earlier than 9 am.

How many people? With sufficient advance purchase (up to 92 days), you can get a Savings Fare ticket for 29€ (one person), 39€ for two, and go by ICE to Nurenberg, leaving before 9 AM, and then take an IC to Ansbach and regional trains from there to Rothenburg. A little more money, but faster trains, and you can leave before 9 AM.

If you do use the Bayern-Ticket, there are Regional Express trains from Munich about every two hours (4:56, 7:05, 9:00) that take the same route (albeit with more stop) to Nürnberg as the ICEs. They make the trip in about 1¾ hrs. Other REs take routes through Donauwörth or Regensburg and take longer.
