Hi
We will be going with a group to Munich and then Austria. Looking for suggestions for a day trip or an outside type tour for the day of arrival. Our flight gets in around 8 am. We did not want to just sit in the hotel for the day. We are staying in the Holiday inn in the center of the city.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Read up on Munich, get a map, and go out exploring on your own.
DAY TRIP sugestion: From MUC airport catch a direct train (1.25 hrs) to Regensburg for a walk through this uniquely well-preserved medieval city with UNESCO World Heritage status. Buy the "Bayern Ticket" day pass for a cheap ride; trains leave the airport at :28 after the hour. You will find lockers for your bags at Regensburg station. After your time there, use this same ticket to catch a direct train into Munich (about 1.5 hrs.)
No tour necessary, especially on an arrival day. You may be exhausted and just want to take it east. I agree that you don’t want to sit in the hotel all day. Who the heck goes on a trip to just sit in the hotel? Besides, you need to get out in the sun to fight jet lag.
Head to Marienplatz. Wander the old town. Check out the fancy clock. Wander through the Viktualienmarkt. Wander some more. Check out the cathedrals. Maybe a short nap. Go to Hofbrauhaus for dinner. There’s plenty to do without a guide. Rick’s books often have walking tours you could follow.
Thanks I have been to Munich a few times. Is there a more local type restaurant that is recommended? Have been to Hofbrauhaus a few times as well.
Our German friends like to go to Der Pschorr – das bayerische Wirtshaus between the Viktualienmarkt and Eataly.
We also make an effort to go the interesting rooms in the Rathskeller, down the escalator under the Rathaus. We also like the Augustiner Klosterwirt across from the Frauenkirche.
thank you! will add to the list
