Munich Neighborhood stay recommendation in Dec

Please provide recommendation which neighborhood to stay for two active couples (ages between 40-60) last week of December. we will be there for Christmas. It is our first time visiting. We are interested in Christmas markets, beer tasting, local cuisines and historical sights. A day trip to Salzburg via public transportation is planned. We have a discount if we book through Marriott but open for a better options for better locations for our interest and safety. Flexible on price range but prefer not exceed $350 per night. Also one couple will arriving MUC late night close to 11pm and looking a hotel by the airport for their first night. Thank you for your time to response.

As far as hotels at the airport go, there is really only one, the Hilton Munich Airport.

It is a short walk from Terminal 2 (LH/UA) and a bit farther from Terminal 1. All other
hotels, including the nearby Novotel, require some form of public xport to reach, which
late at night, would be safe, but add to the time it takes to get to the hotel.

As many others have noted, the area around the main bahnhof is under construction,
so unless the budget constraints are large, you probably want to stay in the Old Town
area, somewhere in the vicinity of Marienplatz. Many quality options in that area. I
really don't think you have to worry about safety in downtown Munich - it is a pretty safe
area. Another option is to stay somewhere in the vicinity of Ostbahnhof. A bit more
of a urban neighborhood feel but easy access to all transport.

Note that the main train station itself is under construction and the reliability of DB trains
is not what it used to be. Also, the bahnhof in Salzburg is a fair walk from the old town.
