Hi All,
My family and I (6 adults and 3 children 3,6,8yrs old) will be traveling on September 3, 2018 from Paris CDG arriving at MUC at 10:20 am and then would like to travel straight away to Salzburg. We will have 3 adults with checked luggage, the rest will have a small carry on. My question is what is the easiest way to get to Salzburg and since we are traveling with such a large number do we need to buy tickets in advanced. I’ve read about the S8 to OST then to Salzburg from there using the Bayern ticket but not sure if that is good for a group or just a single person?? Thanks for any advise or links you can offer.
It is good for groups of up to 5 adults. with children they may travel for free, but you will have to buy two Bayern Tickets, but doing the split right can save a little money.
What are the relationships? It matters because children can travel free if one of the adults in the group is a parent or grandparent.
For instance, if all the kids are brother and sister, and one parent is on the ticket and the other an unrelated adult, then it would be a 2-Person Bayern Ticket for 31 EUR. (25 for the 1st person, 6 for the 2nd, kids ride free). The other 4 adults travel on a separate 4-person Bayern Ticket for 43 EUR (25 for the 1st person and 6 each for the other 3). So it will cost you 74 EUR to move 6 adults and 3 kids from Munich airport to Salzburg.
It is a little complicated, as there are a maximum of 2 adults on a single ticket for the kids to ride free, if there a 3 adults traveling on the ticket, then the kids get charged 6 EUR each.
It might be a little complicated to keep a group of 9 together to make the transfer at Munich Ost. You will have to go down the stairs to the tunnel and walk to proper platform, then back up. But very doable.
The trains to Munich Ost go every 20 minutes, but the regional trains to Salzburg go every hour, so there might be a wait. Also, if a week day, you can't leave from the airport until after 9 am. so if you arrive at 7 am, and get through immigration quickly and get your luggage quickly, you will have to wait to after 9 to get on the train. You can buy the Bayern Ticket out of a vending machine, but if you buy at a ticket window, it will cost 2 EUR more per ticket.
PS. The 3 yo always rides free regardless and does not have to be listed on the ticket. You must write the names of each travel in ink on the back of the ticket. That way the conductor can keep straight who is on what ticket and that you paid the right (or at least not less than the right) fare.
Thank you Sam for the input!! Yes my husband and I are traveling with our 2 sons and my sister and brother-in-law are traveling with their daughter. So we will make sure to split the tickets accordingly!
Which one is the 3 yo?
My niece is the 3 yr old
OK, then put you and your husband and your two kids names on the ticket and it is a 31 EUR ticket (pay just 2 adults). The other ticket list all the other 4 adults. The 3 yo does not need to be named. That one is the 43 EUR ticket.
It may sound complicated, but then you have a complicated group.
