We have stayed twice at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt and thought it was a very good choice - in the old town center, very clean, excellent value, safe and with a very good breakfast. It was a few years ago that we stayed so I am not sure how Covid may have affected it but would highly recommend it based on our prior experience. The RS Germany guidebook has good hotel recommendations for Munich. We have also stayed at the Blauer Bock and the Hotel Monaco would recommend them as well. Have a wonderful trip!

We enjoyed staying at Hotel Torbrau on Tal street in Munich. It has been a hotel for 500 years! It is easy to walk to the Marienplatz from this hotel and the breakfast was wonderful. We also had an excellent dinner at the hotel restaurant Schapeau one evening. The location of the hotel is great, across from the Isartor S Bahn so it is easy to get to from the airport and to other places in Munich including the Hauptbahnhof rail station if you wish to continue on to Salzburg. The staff at Hotel Torbrau were very kind and helpful.

We have stayed in a small place near the train station before our RS tour that was recommended by the guidebook. It was dirt cheap and kind of a pain to get into town, but we were new to travel and timid to walk with our backpack far from the train station. When we moved to Hotel Torbrau we were a little blown away by the difference. It was very nice and well located! Since we didn't pay, I can't comment on the value.

When we returned to Munich on our own (with much more travel experience) we stayed at the Pension am Jakobsplatz recommended in the RS guidebook. It was a lovely experience. The room was small and we shared a bathroom but it was centrally located and functional for us as we'd rather not spend time in our rooms anyway. My favorite part was the personal trip planning with the owner (although I was so jet lagged, and had already meticulously planned that I didn't much need it). The breakfast was lovely and generous and even though the nook was small and we shared with the other family, our schedules never aligned so it didn't matter. There was a small honor beer fridge too and abundant visitor information and books. I left my RS guidebook there (all annotated for Munich)... if you stay I wonder if it's still there.

I am very sorry to report the Pension am Jakobsplatz is no longer open (I hope somebody comes back to tell me I am wrong.). I did not have opportunity to stay there. However, when I learned that Pension Lindner (located a floor up from Pension am Jakobsplatz) was closing I contacted PaJ re a proposed trip in 2020. They replied they were also closing. A big loss as both Pensions were very conveniently located. We had stayed three times at Pension Lindner.

We have stayed twice previously at Hotel am Markt. It is nice, however breakfast is not included and not as good as some other places we have stayed and the price is higher. But the location is good, very close to public transportation and Marienplatz. If you need an elevator theirs is quite small and not good for those with claustrophobia. The rooms have been modernized since our first trip. We may stay there when we return to Munich as we enjoyed our stays and the location.

Also under consideration is the Blauer Bock. We have not stayed there but seems to be popular with those on this site. It is farther from the Marienplatz. Last I knew breakfast could be included in your room rate, if you want it to be.

Good luck in selecting accommodations. Please let us know what you decide and how it worked for you. I think there are many of us who stayed at Pension Lindner who are looking for a new "home" in Munich. I still miss "my" room at Pension Lindner (we always stayed in the same room. It was perfect.).

Happy Planning!

The hotel Metropol is quite nice, and an easy walk from the train station. Clean, great breakfasts, and nicely appointed rooms. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187309-d1410589-Reviews-Hotel_Metropol-Munich_Upper_Bavaria_Bavaria.html

Another nice place is Hotel Uhland. We have stayed several times here as well. Residential area, easy bus to anywhere as the bus stop is just steps away. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187309-d239023-Reviews-Hotel_Uhland-Munich_Upper_Bavaria_Bavaria.html Very clean, nice staff, and wonderful breakfasts.

I'm a 70 year old female solo traveller who (pre-covid), visited Munich twice annually, and I always stay at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. The hotel offers 2 size single rooms, but I'm a small woman, so I always book the small single room. It's sparkling clean, has a TV, (no fridge or microwave, so in winter, I use the window sill to chill my beer!). The price includes a very nice breakfast, and the location is outstanding! It's about a block (3 min walk) from the Vikualienmarkt, 6 min walk to Marienplatz, 20 min walk to the Hauptbahnhof, a 30 min walk to Theresienwiese. The S-Bahn/ U-Bahn station to the airport and other parts of the city, is at Marienplatz (6 min walk from hotel). I only travel with carry-on and walk everywhere! It's perfect for me - a simple solo traveller. Check the website for room pix, etc, on all rooms or info on the other rooms. Viel Spaß!
