"Inner district" would be good for that only and not cover the trip from the airport to it. You need a "Airport-City-Day-Ticket" (E. 12.80), good for the transportation airport to city and the entire MVV network (not only metro but also S-Bahn, tram, and busses). You can get it from any ticket machine at the airport (there is no sale on the train!). Set it to English and then 1. select "MVV" ("Münchener Verkehrsverbund"), 2. select "Airport-City-Ticket". The ticket is valid till 6am next morning.

Except she said it's for "my husband and I", so they need a group day ticket for 23,90€. It looks like the group Airport-City-Day-Ticket is the same thing as the entire network Day-Ticket except it comes pre-validated since they assume you want to use it right away from the airport.

If they are, indeed, doing any more traveling on the MVV network that day (like going to Nymphenburg), they need the day ticket. If all they are doing is going to Karlsplatz, then two 4 zone single trip tickets at 11,20€ each is all they need.

Almost every attraction in Munich, except Dachau, is in the inner district, so for another day, if that is all they are doing, the Inner--District-Group-Day-Ticket for 12,60€ is what they want. On a day when they want to go to Dachau, which is in the 2nd district, a Munich-XXL-Group-Day-Ticket would be needed.

The MVV page on tickets is here.
