Munich - July '24

We're planning to visit Germany after a 10 days in Switzerland from 5-12 July. We fly out of Frankfort on 13 July.
We are aware the Euro tournament will be ongoing and that one of the semifinals is in Munich on 9 July. Rather then spending time on trains travelling to different cities, we think basing out of Munich for days trips and time in Munich will serve us better. What part of the city is recommended to stay in for access to main train stations but also for local enjoyment. Any recommended day trips would be appreciated.

There are a number of good hotels around the station, but the surrounding area is less than attractive at the moment because it is one big construction site (including the train station building). So, I would stay in a hotel near the S-Bahn between Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof. All S-Bahn lines between the main station and Munich East go through the same tunnel, so there is a train every two minutes or so during the day. There are many recommendations here on the forum if you search for "hotel" + "Marienplatz" / "Rosenheimer Platz" / "Ostbahnhof (Munich east)".

We just stayed for the Xmas markets at the Motel One about 3 long blocks from Rosenheim Platz. You can walk it to the center or take the S Bahn. If you like museums the Deutsche Museum is about a block from the motel.

I would opt for the Marienplatz area. We Loved our stay at Hotel Lux there last year. We have also stayed at Hotel am Viktualientmarkt which is good, but just not as much character as the Lux. The location is great, the breakfast buffet is included and fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. The Lux breakfast was really good, but was a bit of an extra cost, but well worth it for us.
