Munich in Late October questions

We will be traveling to Munich the last week of October. We've been several times during the summer months but never this late in the year. We were lucky to have beautiful weather for the biergartens but can guess that option will be out due to weather/daylight hours. What non-touristy beer hall can we go to? We've done the Hofbräuhaus several times and definitely want to try somewhere else. I'm a radler drinker so I'm not picky about varieties of beer although my husband may be more adventurous.

Also - has anyone been to the Auer Dult? We will be able to go on the last day it's open but we'll be traveling from Stuttgart that morning and want to know if it's worth leaving earlier to make more time for it. What are the best things to see/buy there?

Is it difficult to get into the Czech Republic/Prague (we'll have a car) and back for a side trip? We've only traveled through the borders of Austria and Luxembourg which were easy and I wasn't sure if this would be a problem now with the borders being controlled due to the influx of refugees (this was in today's news for both the Czech Republic & Germany and their Austrian borders). We also plan to drive to Austria and possibly northern Italy - is anyone having more difficulty getting through the border (we have US passports so I'm not anticipating any issues). I know with the Schengen agreement, borders are not usually an issue at all but given the current events, I am just anticipating some delays. This concern may not be merited at all and hopefully there will not be any issues by the time we are there.

If we do go to the Czech Republic, are there any interesting towns closer to the border to visit rather than all the way to Prague? Would love to just say we were there but I do not have my heart set on seeing anything in particular.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Maria,

Just wanted to say that don't rule out sitting outdoors in a Biergarten. After a few trips to Berchtesgaden, Fuessen, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Zell am See, etc. and even the Italian Dolomites in mid to late October, we've experienced some nice weather. While the usual was temps in the 50's to 60's during the day and chilly to cold at night and early mornings, we did get lucky with a few 70 something degree days.

You'll find tourist everywhere but I've always enjoyed Hofbräukeller, Haidhauser Augustiner, and Paulaner am Nockherberg.

Also - has anyone been to the Auer Dult? We will be able to go on the last day it's open but we'll be traveling from Stuttgart that morning and want to know if it's worth leaving earlier to make more time for it. What are the best things to see/buy there?

I've been many times and bought many things there but its mostly just practical stuff like earthenware storage crocks for potatoes, pepper mills, and other kitchen stuff. There are many booths selling things you would find at a flea market as well (knickknacks, used clothing, books, etc). 2 hours is enough of time to spend there.

No its not, but make sure you rental agreement allows you to take the car into the Czech Republic (I've had some that didn't). Personally for a short trip to Prague I would fly, take the bus or train from Munich before I drove. You won't really need the car in Prague.

My husband and I have been to the Czech Republic twice and had a rental car both times. There weren't any issues driving and the roads where in good condition. We drove from Prague to Germany and back on our first trip and then last October we drove from Vienna to Cesky Krumlov and then to Regensburg, Germany. Several years ago it cost a lot to drive a rental car into Eastern European countries but that is not the case anymore. I would suggest you make the car rental arrangements before you leave since it will be less expensive to do so.

If you have the time and are looking for something different, make the trip out to Andechs. Since you have a car, it shouldn't be too hard for you to get there. It's a monastery that makes some of the best beer we've ever had. The property is beautiful. There's a nice biergarten as well. We were there a few years ago in late October, and got lucky with an absolutely beautiful day - bright blue sky, sunny and warm. It's definitely worth the trip if you have some nice weather.

We will be in Germany (including Munich) and Poland at the end of October as well this year. We're hoping for good weather, but come prepared. I've found traveling at that time of year just requires layers. It can get warm and sunny during the day, but definitely chilly at night. Be prepared for rain as well.
