With such short time I would definitely stay in a hotel within the old town. Some places with good reviews here are am Viktualienmarkt, Blauer Bock, Lindner, and Muenchner Kindl. I've stayed in Muenchner Kindl. It was decent, but it does lack an elevator. The en-suite bathroom was very tiny.

Just outside the city wall, near the train station, is Hotel Royal. Royal gets a bad rap because the surrounding neighborhood is a bit "spicy", but it's ok inside and a good value.

In a little nicer neighborhood near the Oktoberfest grounds, still near the Hbf, is Hotel Uhland. It's a bit higher priced.

I wouldn't worry too much about stars, other than any hotel, to have 3 or more, must have someone on the staff that speaks English, if that matters to you. Other than that, stars are awarded for amenities, not conditions. Do you really need a shoe shine machine in your room or 24 hour room service? To have even one star, a hotel has to meet certain standards of cleanliness and repair. I have found the same standard seem to apply to any hotel in Germany, whether it has stars or not; the Germans just have high standards.

To have more than one star, a hotel has to accept credit cards, which Germans, in general, don't want to, so a lot of hotels, even though they could have stars, don't bother for just one star. There are a lot of very nice, no star hotels in Germany.

"Authentic dinner"? I actually like the Hofbräuhaus. Some people don't like the quality, but I don't think they question the authenticity. Anyway, one of the most authentically Münchner dish is Schweinehaxe, which is entirely too fatty for me. Another Bierhall with authentic food would be zum Augustiner, on the pedestrian street, Kaufingerstr., between Karlstor and Marienplatz. On my first visit to Munich, the office manager for the Munich offfice of my company took us to Augustiner as an example of authentic Munich food. A third place with authentic food would be the Ratskeller in the basement of the city hall on Marienplatz.

I also like the food at the Hofbrauhaus and the atmosphere can't be beat - touristy but locals go there too.

I stayed at the Hotel am Markt, really nice hotel just off the viktualienmarkt and reasonably priced for a single, breakfast was extra. I never ate there but the pub/bistro was usually packed and the food smelled wonderful. It was just so convenient to the Marienplatz and the metro. I would definitely stay there again.
