Hello. My husband and I will be arriving in Munich from Salzburg in July. As of right now I have 4 nights planned for Munich. One day will be a day trip out to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. We also plan to go to different beer halls and breweries. Is 4 nights a reasonable amount of time to explore the city?
With those day trips I think 4 days is enough.
It all depends what you want to visit. 4 days sounds reasonable if you want to visit centre of the city, Old town etc. If you deduct one day for Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, you can scratch the surface of the city in the remaining 3 but not much more. If you are an art lover world class art museums/galeries Alte and Neue Pinkothek are a must (and I would say they are a must even if you are not an art lover). The same for Residenz museum, These 3 alone require a day or more. Konigsplatz, English Garten with Chinesisher turm and visit to beergarten at least half a day. Then one day say, Karlsplatz/Stachus, Neuhauser strasse, Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, Sendlingerstrasse, Viktualienmarkt and maybe Hofbrauhaus or similar. Still there are Odeonsplatz, and side streets,Theatinerstrasse, Isartor.. It also depends how fit you are. Maybe above mentioned can be visited in 4 days but there is still Nymphenburg, Schwabing with its side streets with Jugenstil/Art Nouveau houses facades etc. Also a piece of advice if you are in Linderhof, try to visit Oberammergau.
It really does depend. We have enjoyed Munich and have visited it several times for 2-3 days. After a couple days we are ready to move on. We prefer visits to more moderate sized towns like Augsburg, Landshut, Regensburg, etc. rather than extended stays in Munich. They all have beer halls and breweries (though no Bier that I like better than Augustiner Bräu). You will likely have a great time either way.
