Flying into Munich mid-October then heading to Garmisch area to see family for a few days. We are trying to keep a flexible schedule to spend some time with family and some time in Munich. My question is do I absolutely need reservations for mid-range hotel options in the Marienplatz area of Munich? We want to adjust timing to Garmisch depending on weather.
How many is "we". For one room and a flexible budget you should be able to find something. I wouldn't leave getting a reservation for the day of, though.
Good information, thank you. Just one room, but likely a busy area even in the off-season.
Probably not a problem for you, but note that Oktoberfest is from 19 Sept. to 4 October. Rooms will be much more expensive and full during that period. We'll be there, but staying in Mittenwald, then up to Munich after Oktoberfest ends.
What do you consider a mid-range hotel? IMO hotels in the Marienplatz area more high-end rather than mid-range. Given that Oktoberfest will over and Christmas Markets won't have started, I think you will be able to find a good mid-range hotel in Munich on short notice. It just may not be as centrally located as you want.
