Munich Hotels during Oktoberfest

My fiance and I are planning a trip to Germany this Sept, with 4-5 days spent in Munich for day trips, and of course, Oktoberfest. My question is when should we book our hotel for Munich and are there any hotels/areas of Munich you would/wouldn't recommend staying in?
Thanks for the help!

It never hurts to book as early as possible for an event such as Oktoberfest where rooms sell out at sky high prices. Just make sure you understand the cancellation policy and have it in writing (email). Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt areas are always in high demand and you can rest assured the room rates at hotels in those areas will be especially high. Train station area is kind of seedy but not dangerous. Have you look at Pension Lindner? http://www.pension-lindner.com/

You are probably too late to get a room at anything but a sky-high rate. We spent more for 3 nights in Munich during Oktoberfest last year than we did for a week elsewhere. We made the decision to pay 2.5 times normal to get a nice place than €150 to stay somewhere that normally costs €45.
Look at booking.com and/or trip advisor and then look up the hotel website and see what they offer. They may have rooms available that aren't showing on the booking sites. Those booking sites will give you a good idea about relative quality.

The place we stayed, a block from the Hofbrauhaus, is already sold out.

Oktoberfest-insider.com as well as the Munich board on TA should have tips and current info.

Good luck

Hi Laura-

If possible, don't use Munich to daytrip FROM during the 'Fest. Also, if you have an option, some hotels in Munich are less expensive for the second week in the 'Fest. The number of available hotels and the price are both directly proportional to how close you are to the center of Munich. Also, don't be afraid to stay in a town outside of Munich and daytrip in via train. (Don't drink and drive.) The main trainstation is only 5-6 blocks from the 'Fest. Towns like Augsburg, Freising, Murnau, Inglestadt, etc. are perfectly acceptable places to daytrip from.

Zeeba mentioned the two sites I use a lot- I have found the reviews on both sites to be pretty reliable. Be sure you can cancel with no penalty when you make reservations. That way if something better (price and location) comes up you can rebook THEN cancel. I tend to review hotels I am interested in at least every other day to see if anything is better than what I've already booked several months ago.

Have a great trip!!!

As others have mentioned you are too late this year to get a good deal on a Hotel in Munich during Oktoberfest. I'd recommend staying outside the city but on a train line with easy access to Munich. Unless money is no object, I'd recommend staying in a town along the BOB train route (private train line south of Munich, http://www.bayerischeoberlandbahn.de/). The BOB is a little faster than the same S-bahn route to Holzkirchen as it does not stop at every stop, and its faster and more frequent than regional trains to places like Tegernsee, Bad Tolz, or Lenggries. It runs ever 30min during the week and takes you right to Hauptbahnhof where you can walk to Oktoberfest.

If you don't mind paying the high hotel price I'd recommend staying near the Ostbahnof (Haidhausen area) and avoiding the Hauptbahnof area during Oktoberfest. The neighborhood near Ostbahnhof is very charming plus you still have great access to transportation to the fair grounds (direct on the U5) or for day trips from Ostbahnhof.

There are lots of options for staying out of town and taking the train into Munich. As just one example, we really like the small, scenic town of Landshut. It is about an hour from the Landshut Bahnhof to the Theresienwiese, München, where the Oktoberfest is held. There is a single connection at the Munich main train station from a regional train to an Ubahn. Good connections till about midnight returning. Other folks can give equally good recommendations from other directions. I like Munich but not at Oktoberfest prices.
