Munich Hotel Uhland or Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt

We have been planning our trip to Germany/ Austria for next June and are planning two nights in Munich. We will be in a triple room and have quotes for both Hotel Uhland and Hotel a.m. Viktualienmarkt. The rates are exactly the same. Any pros or cons to each in terms of location? I have read through several threads and see that many people like both these properties. The only thing I have spotted was that Hotel Uhland might be quieter at night if it is hot and we need the windows opens. Which one should we pick and why?

I have only stayed at Uhland. I liked it VERY much. The triple room we had was very clean and large and the bathroom large, well appointed and very clean as well. The breakfast with staff served coffee/tea was a wonderful way to start the day. You are correct, it is a more residential and quiet area. Its fairly close to the Oktoberfest grounds and a metro. It was about a 10-13 minute walk to the start of the Marienplatz and the train station. I would stay at Uhland again in a heartbeat. I have not stayed at Viktualienmarkt. I'm assuming it is close to the market, thus it is more central to old town.

I've not stayed at either of these; usually stay at the Blauer Bock across from the Viktualienmarkt, but I would prefer to be a little closer to the action. I've found most hotels usually have noisier street rooms and quieter courtyard side rooms if noise is a concern. The Viktualienmarkt is a fun place to visit and have a meal or a beer, and the Marienplatz is only a couple of short blocks. On a short stay in Munich I would choose closer to the city sights. Just me.

Hi Ruth-

Thank you for your feedback. I had looked at Blauer Bock but they will not allow three adults in a room. Our daughter will be 19 at time of travel. We are doing a lot of apartments during our travel but with only being in Munich two nights a hotel will be best. I think I am leaning more towards being in town. Thank you again.

We also stayed at Uhland. It was quite a few years ago, but I'm happy to hear it's still a good choice. Have not stayed at the other.

I have never spent a night in either one of your places, although I have spent over 21 nights in Munich. In 2007 I walked past Hotel Uhland on my way to the Oktoberfest grounds, and, despite the crowds at the time, Uhland appeared to be an oasis of calm in an otherwise hectic environment. I was very impressed with the location for Hotel Uhland.

I found Hotel am Viktualienmarkt on Google Maps and looked at the street view. It looks too hectic for my comfort.

But, am Viktualienmarkt is very close to the things in Munich people most likely want to see. Hotel Uhland requires more effort (and possibly a day pass) to get to these same places.

Pension Lindner also has rooms for three, although I have no idea how their rates compares with the quotes you got. However, it is a little quieter location but still as close to Marienplatz as is am Vitualienmarkt. Personallyl, I will probably try to stay at Lindner on my next visit to Munich.

I think your 19yo would make a two hands up choice for center of the action over quiet residential no matter how nice the hotel is.

I have not stayed at the Viktualienmarkt but have stayed at the Uhland and found it a very lovely place. Yes, it is not as close to the action as the other, but at the end of a long day in Munich, I find that one of its attractions. i looked at Lee's suggestion and it looks very nice. The only thing for me is that I would make sure I get a ensuite room as it looks like some of them are not. I know a lot of people don't mind going down the hall to use the toilet or to shower, but my days of doing that are over!

I would add that I was with my sons, ages 20 and 22 and they loved Uhland. Didn't mind the walk to a few of the beer halls on/near the Marienplatz. They especially liked the ample and elegantly presented breakfasts and even though it was not Oktoberfest, they liked going down the block to the grounds. They still talk about how much they loved that place (and Hotel Austria in Vienna)

Thank you so much for all your feedback. Such a tough decision. Pension Lindner doesn’t have rates posted for next year yet. She asked that I email her next month. Thank you for all your feedback. I am going to mull it over and share all your input with my husband. The 19 year old daughter just shrugged her shoulders and told me to decide. Lol
