Munich hotel suggestions--modern, close to S-Bahn

Our next Europe trip will start with 3 nights in Munich. I have been there 4 times before but have yet to find a place to love. Hotel Uhland is sweet but the wrong location. We would like to be close to Marienplatz or Deutsches Museum rather than the Hauptbahnhof. We enjoy walking all day but when we arrive and depart we will need S-Bahn connections to the airport and then the Hauptbahnhof.

We will be arriving by plane after a long trip from Seattle and would like to make it easy on arrival. Last visit we stayed at Hotel am Viktuelenmarkt and it was OK but not memorable.

My husband really likes modern/minimalist and I was thinking of a Motel One but that is a little too spare--no closet or place to put out luggage would drive us both crazy. We would also like a friendly welcome. I speak passable German but my husband does not, so feels a bit out of his comfort zone in Germany. I would hope to change that with our lodging if possible, with a nice place.

Budget to €200.

Well modern is the Hilton Munich City with direct access from the lower level to the Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station for the S-8 to the airport. Staid there about 5 years ago when it was a Holiday Inn Select. Very nice breakfast, and of course, very modern.

Don't give up on the minimilaist idea of the Motel One near Sendlingertor. I think you would survive for 3 nights just fine. We love the location, there we no other American tourists in the breakfast area the last time we stayed there, about 3 years ago. We've stayed there on 2 different trips to Munich. There are places to hang your clothing and set small suitcases, just not closets and luggage racks. It's well thought out space. I'd return in a minute for a quick stay in Munich!

EDIT: Its about half way between the Marienplatz and Deutsches Museum. It's also near the Viktueleienmarkt and new enclosed area to the southeast.

Another vote for Munich City Hilton. You enter it from the station. The best breakfast I have ever seen. Try to get a rate that includes breakfast. Very short walk to Museum.

There is also a Novotel near Rosenheimerplatz but my recommendation would be MotelOne. They have locations all over the city.

Thanks. Sounds like I should re-consider on Motel One. The reviews I reD about no place for luggage were for the Deutsches Museum one. Maybe Sendlinger Tor has a bit more room? With three nights we do like to unpack a bit.

I will also look into the Hilton as the location is appealing.

Lola , take a look at the Pullman Hotel at Theodor Dombart strasse in Schwabing ( Nordfriedhof stop on U6 ) The place seems to fit exactly what you are looking for . New , modern decor , with all the creature comforts and about ten minutes on the U6 to Marienplatz and S bahn connection . From the airport there is a bus that goes directly to the Nordfriedhof stop ( right by the back entrance to the hotel ) . We stayed there in 2013 , and are headed back Sunday for a week in Munich . Book breakfast as well , it was excellent . I would link this for you , but with limited computer skills , and doing this from my tablet in Granada , I'm sure you will forgive me .

Also , the hotel is in a lovely residential area on a quiet ,tree lined street .

The best breakfast I have ever seen [Hilton]

At $22-$45 per person, I would hope so.

Pension Lindner is less than ¼ mile walk from the Marienplatz S-Bahn station. The price, $112-$124 for a double with breakfast and a private bath, is well within your budget.

Although I've seen it recommended on this website, I haven't personally stayed there (although I probably will next trip).

Yes! I've stayed there twice and have been very pleased with it. It may not fit the definition of a "modern" hotel, though. It's basic, but very clean and exceptionally convenient. No A/C. Frau Sinzinger is a wonderful hostess and puts on a terrific breakfast buffet.

The website for Pension Lindner shows only 4 double rooms, some with/without ensuite bathroom, so if you want a room with a bathroom, you better book early.

The Maximilian hotel is wonderful. We stayed in a studio with a king bed, sitting area, fully functional kitchenette (with a nespresso machine!), and a large bath.
It was on the pricey side since we happened to be there during Oktoberfest, but we found it to be a good value nonetheless.

Hotel Platzl, Hotel Torbrau, Hotel Louis - They're all excellent places near Marienplatz, but I've only personally stayed at the Platzl.

Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt is my go to hotel - I know it's not fancy and no AC, but it works for me.

Thank you all for your suggestions---it was helpful.

We are down to two nights for Munich as I had to add a night to Lake Bled where my husband will be competing in a Masters rowing event. The Penzion in Bled is so inexpensive I can splurge a bit more in Munich than I expected. So no Motel One necessary.

I like the look and space of the Maximillian studios, but their website booking engine is impossible---it has not worked for two days. I could book on booking.com but prefer not to. I emailed the hotel about the booking problem (first I could not change the dates of stay on the calendar, then when I did it says no rooms available no matter what dates are entered)---and they have not responded. So thanks to Tim's suggestions it will be the Torbraü, where we can choose a room in either traditional or contemporary style (and I will request the latter). My husband will enjoy the Nespresso machine (assume that is what it is, as they mention pods).

The Torbrau also has AC in the rooms which can be a big plus. Of all the times I've been to Munich I've never had AC but really wished I had it on several occasions.

My favorite hotel closest to the Marienplatz is the Platzl Hotel, less than a 5 minute walk. It's wonderful but pricey. I don't mind splurging on one hotel on a trip. It's not minimalist, if you're set on that. We've also stayed at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt (a further walk and as you said, we thought just so-so... room was really tiny) and also the Falkenturm Hotel (also further from Marienplatz but not bad). We just love the Platzl. Great breakfasts and easy walk.
