Planning on visiting the Christmas markets in Vienna and taking the train to others. Can anyone recommend a mid-priced hotel near Marienplatz in Munich?
What did you think of Rick's suggestions?
I stayed in the Mercure Hotel Munich Altstadt and it was perfectly fine for me -- twice on my recent December trip. A nice breakfast. A short 5-minute or less walk to Marienplatz. Take the shortcut thru a shopping passageway.
I stayed at the Motel One Sendlinger Tor about 2 years ago. It was a pleasant 10-minute walk to Marienplatz. I really like the Motel One chain. Rooms are simple. Common area on the main floor is comfortable. Price is reasonable.
We stayed at the Living Hotel Das Viktualienmarkt. Frauenstrasse 4, Great location across the street from the Viktualienmarkt. Short walk to Marienplatz and the U-bahn. Walkable to many good restaurants. This was reasonably priced for us, but not sure what your criteria is.
We stayed at the Excelsior by Geisel near the train station. Very nice place about a ten to 15 minute walk from Marienplatz. There is an underground shopping center you use to cross a busy street so you are on a pedestrian street the entire way.
Tip: Reserve your lunch or dinner ahead. The city is very busy at Christmas time with tourist and locals celebrating (saw office parties, etc.)
Hotel Schlicker is a perfect location. Literally a 2 minute walk to Marienplatz. Breakfast included. Would stay there again if ever my travels take me.back to Munich.
I used to go to a trade show in Munich every two years and I would travel there at least once or twice a year in between to meet customers and friends in the region. Except for one visit in the early 90's, I never stayed at hotels directly in Munich. The public transportation is so good that any of the many surrounding towns are worth considering. In my upcoming trip in August, my wife and I will stay in Feldkirchen.
Taking a 10 or 15 minute train ride may not be as convenient but it will both save you money and also (IMHO) be far more gemutlich.
In December 2022 we stayed at both the Hotel Lux as well as the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. Both were good, but we adored the Lux! The Lux does not have an elevator though, so keep that in mind, but the beautiful huge spiral staircase is just stunning.
Stayed in the Motel One at Sendlinger Tor and spent a little more for the balcony room on the top floor.
Highly recommended as everything was clean comfortable and the breakfast was decent if you don't mind continental.
Also close to everything.
We have stayed at the Hotel Torbrau twice. They have an excellent breakfast. The staff is wonderful. And it’s a short walk to the Marienplatz.
