Munich Holiday Inn Express City West

Does anyone have any experience staying at Holiday Inn express city West in Munich? Is it in a good part of town? Wondering if the trains, trams and buses are easy to navigate to get to and from city center. Also, I saw that you can get a day transportation pass for most trains, buses and trams for approx $25 per day for our group of 3. Does anyone have any info on that as well?

Lots of people have experience with it...you just have to look here:

It's near the main train station which is not the part of Munich that anybody really comes to see. Nothing wrong with the area other than a bit seedy. If you want to stay in the middle of the nice area near pedestrian areas of Viktualientmarkt or Marienplatz then you'll need to look at other hotels such as Hotel Torbrau, Platzl, Hotel am Viktualienmarkt, Hotel Blauer Bock, etc.

Yes you can travel cheaply with an MVV card all around Munich or you can use the Bavarian Pass and travel cheaply all over Bavaria...such as to Neuschwanstein Castle or to Salzburg

There will be a multitude of people chiming in saying how they stayed at the train station and there's nothing wrong with the area - that's exactly correct and that's what I've already said. But if you want to stay in the nicer area then look at the above hotels.

This is actually not near the main train station but 2 SBahn stops away near Hirschgarten. I'm with Tim that I usually steer people away from the Main Station area the same as it's more geared to business travelers and not tourist (similar to what you find near airports as well). The Hirschgarten area where this hotel is located is a little nicer than near the main station but it is a bit if an urban wasteland in that area will mostly apartment blocks and not much in the way of shops and restaurants. From here you are 5 sBahn stops to Marienplatz. If I was there for business I might stay here but otherwise I would look for something more central or in a more active neighborhood.

If you picked this hotel because you were trying to use hotel points I would recommend the Holiday Inn on Rosenheimer Platz (Holiday Inn Munich - City Centre) instead. Much nicer neighborhood and more centrally located at only 2 stops from Marienplatz. There is access to the SBahn station directly inside the hotel as well.

DJ thanks so much for your reply. That was the info I was looking for. I looked at reviews of corse and they’re all great. But wanted more info about the area.

So another question for you... you said you don’t recommend the area near the main train station at Alstadt. But it seems there is a huge area of hotels in that area. So is that not a good area? We’re looking for an economy priced hotel. The latest one is Hotel Bayer’s Which again has awesome reviews, but we’ll be traveling as 4 adults and 2 18 year old girls. Just looking for the best area with the best price. And would love to be within walking distance to Alstadt. Was looking at hotels further away because the family were traveling with is apprehensive about the very large extended area around and near the train station.

Yes there are a lot of hotels as it is close to the train station, but like Tim said it is seedy. Lots of gambling halls, exotic dance bars, gold buyers, used cell phone shops and lots of young men just hanging out in front of the shops. It’s by no means unsafe but there are better areas in town to spend your holiday.

Lucky for you you don’t have to go far to find a nicer area. Tim has some good recommendations. For an economy choice, I usually recommend Motel One Sendlinger Tor. It’s a very nice local budget German hotel chain. They only have double rooms so you’d have to get three rooms.

Thanks again for your info DJ. I read through some of your other posts to questions and got a lot of info. So happy to have this forum and people who are willing to share their knowledge!! Unfortunately Motel One is booked for our days in May, but Admiral Hotel nearby has openings and seems to be a good choice.

Hopefully we can get it booked before it’s full as well!!

Thanks so much!
