Munich Help

I'm almost done booking each leg of my trip but Munich is giving me some trouble. I need a hotel / B&B for 2 adults and 2 children (both 10 yrs old). Check in July 22, 2014 and Check out July 27, 2014. We want our children in the same room with us which is giving me the problem. Most of the hotels suggested on this forum either don't have rooms for 4 people or they are booked already.

Anyone have any ideas where i can stay? I would prefer somewhere in the city center between the train station and Marien Platz but will also look into any good hotel that has easily accessed transportation to the main attractions.

Thanks,
Ben

How old are your children? Hotel Royal has family rooms, with a double bed and a sofa bed (presumably for smaller children) and group rooms with four single beds.

Twin boys 10 years old. Is Hotel Royal a good place to stay? Someone on here was saying it wasn't in the best neighborhood.

Did you try vrbo or homeaway for an apartment rental?

As I understand it (Ken would know better), the neighborhood around Royal is bit "seedy", but not unsafe.

Hotel Münchnerkindl is inside the old town, about 2 blocks from the pedestrian street between Karlstor and Marienplatz and shows 4-bed rooms. The neighborhood doesn't have the "attractions" of the neighborhood around Royal, but it's four or five stories high without an elevator.

Ben,

I would also suggest trying Hotel Royal. It's very close to the main station so a very convenient location, and it's very comfortable. IMO the neighborhood is just fine and I don't have any hesitation at all in staying there (in fact, I'm booked again for later this year). There are some Bars and Clubs on the same street as the hotel, but it's all "low key" and inside the hotel is a completely different world. They serve a fantastic breakfast and I'm sure the different breakfast items will be interesting for your children. It's not a long walk from Hotel Royal to Marienplatz and being so close to the station means that it's easy to get anywhere via Metro or whatever.

I'd normally also suggest Hotel Uhland which is another wonderful hotel, but it's considerably farther from the station (about a 15 minute walk) and the sights, so probably not as convenient with small children (especially when you're on the way home after a long day of sightseeing and the children are tired and cranky).

Happy travels!

If you want to be in the nicer part of town and away from the seedy train station try Hotel Munchner Kindl or Hotel Viktualienmarkt.

In 2010, I stayed for a week at Hostel Munich-Park and I was surprised at how many family suites they had in the hostel. Many children were around all the time. It is located at Miesingstrasse 4 and I believe the Munich Zoo was in the area. From what I understand, German hostels often have family accommodations and offer an inexpensive, clean space to stay. Breakfast and other meals are available onsite. There was a metro station close by with a very good bakery in the entrance! This may be another option for you.

Ben,

Check Hotel Monaco. Near the train station and I believe they have a family room. Great little hotel.

I stayed at the Hotel Viktualienmarkt in their 4 person room and found it to be quite nice.

We stayed in the family room at Hotel Munchner Kindl several times and loved it. It was me, my wife and 2 young sons. It's at the top (which was good because our boys are little loud) but they'll provide plenty of fans to beat any heat. We stayed there in July and August. I'd recommend it.

We stayed at Münchner Kindl last September. It was fine.

The positives: only two blocks from the pedestrian street between Karlstor and Marienplatz. The people that run it are nice and speak English.

The negatives: Five (?) stories and no elevator.

Breakfast is extra. Normally that's a big deal for me, but since my partner didn't want breakfast it was no big deal.

A few blocks south, near Sendlingertor is a great pastry shop (Woerner's). Their chocolate mousse torte is to die for. And if you are missing a traditional American breakfast, with real bacon and fried eggs, they have it.
