Munich Germany to Milan Italy

Mid Aug of 2022 we will have 10 days to get from Munich to Milan so would like to take our time by bus in order to stay in some beautiful and interesting towns on the way down. Train would be fine if that would work better. Towns with anything special or festivals during that time? Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Could you tell us a bit more about your interests? Hiking? Mountain views? Museums? Etc.
There are many possibilities and many routes from Munich to Milan, and your main mode of travelling would probably be the train.

My pick of route would go through Füssen (mainly for Ludwig II castles, 2-3 nights), Lindau (DE) for Lake Konstanz (1 night is enough), Pontresina (CH) via Chur to travel the amazing Albula railway and see great mountain scenery with some hikes (3 nights), and Varenna (IT) for lake Como, reached via the incredible Bernina railway (3 nights).
But this is only one of many possible routes!

Day 1 - take a 5h 15m train from Munich to Bern via Zurich, sleep in Bern.
Day 2 – take a combination of trains, bus and cable car(s) to Gimmelwald or Mürren (2h and requires 3 to 4 connections). Sleep in the Berner Oberland for three nights.
Day 3 – explore the Schilthornbahn or the Jungfraubahn.
Day 4 - hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg.
Day 5 – take cable car(s), bus and trains to Luzern (3h and requires 3 to 4 connections), sleep in Luzern.
Day 6 – explore Lake Lucerne, sleep in Luzern.
Day 7 – take the Gotthard Panorama to Lugano, sleep in Lugano.
Day 8 – take direct train to Milan (1h 15m), sleep in Milan.
Day 9 – take direct train to Varenna (1h 15m) and explore Varenna before taking a 15-minute ferry to Bellagio and have dinner, sleep in Milan.

Day 3 – explore the Schilthornbahn and Jungfraubahn.

That is an awful lot to do in one day, and on both sides of the valley.

As Nigel said. The train ride up and down to Jungfraujoch would take up much of that time. Go to whichever has the best weather on top.

I know you said "bus"... we did this route in a car with many side excursions and loved it. Driving the Brenner Pass into the Dolomiti was full of gorgeous scenery. Another thing, Lindau was a 3 night stop- a "vacation from the vacation" as Rick says. Strolled, took a boat across to see a Raptor show ( we were with kids), and decompressed from lots of sighseeing. Love both Munich and Milan and each is worth 3 days individually. Have fun!
