Munich -> Fussen -> Berchtesgaden

Hi-

We will be in Munich a few days this summer without a car and then plan to rent a car to take to Fussen. We will stay overnight in Fussen. The next day we will be driving from Fussen to the Berchtesgaden area where we will be staying for a few days. Does anyone have any recommendations for towns that are worth stopping in during our long drive from Fussen to Berchtesgaden? It looks like the possibilities that I have heard of are Garmisch-P, Mittenwald, Oberammargau, and Innsbruck. I am not sure what is between those towns and then Berchtesgaden.

I know we could see the Zugspitze but before getting to Munich, we will have come from a stay in Murren, Switzerland so I am not sure if there is value in going up another mountain or not? It also seems that may take a long time as well.

Any tips for neat things to see along the way that aren't too time consuming would be great. I should mention that we will have our 3 sons with us (ages 15, 12, and 9) so would like stops that would appeal to them as well. Thank you!

It would depend on which route you take, but Chiemsee would be worth a stop.

Depending on how much time you have, Linderhof is also worth a visit. In the summer, though, you would probably want to reserve tickets. Otherwise, you may wait all day to get in. Having seen Ludwig II's other palaces, the actual palace of Linderhof didn't blow me away, but the grounds are really interesting, particularly the Grotto. Probably one of the weirdest things ever built by a European monarch.
