Munich customs and connection

We will fly on Oct 22 from SFO (San francisco) to Munich and have about two hrs ( and 15 minutes) to catch a connecting flight from Munich to Dresden. We only have carry on - no checked backage. Do we need to clear customs and do we have enough time?

Thank you,
DF

Yes you have plenty of time. I’m guessing both flights are Lufthansa or a Star Alliance partner (like United), if so you connection will be contained in terminal 2. I would consider one hour enough for a connection like this.

You'll have to go through immigration in Munich. ("Customs" is a 10 second walk exciting out of baggage claim for most people who have nothing to declare.) If your incoming flight is on time, 2:15 should be plenty of time. If you are late, then you would automatically get put on the next flight to Dresden, assuming there is one. (Assuming your two flights are both on one ticket.) When I make connections like this, I always check that. It wouldn't be unheard of for a flight from SFO to be two hours late to Europe, even if unlikely.

You say you will have carry on bags only - if you are flying Lufthansa, they have a smaller carry on size allowance than some other airlines. Check the Lufthansa website carefully and measure your bags. Also, the flight from Munich to Dresden will probably be on a smaller aircraft and you may have to gate-check your bags for that flight, but it won't affect your time. That happened to me and several others flying with me.
