Munich castles and museums

We are a party of six (mix of adults and kids who love cars) going this summer, staying in munich only 3 days. One day is arrival, next is Stuttgart to see the car museums, and the last day we were going to day trip to Neuschwanstein. Now considering staying local to explore more of Munich. However this will be a Monday and I think I read that museums were closed on Mondays but not castles. Is this correct? Wondering if we can see Munich this trip and Neuschwanstein next time or if everything is closed on Monday we should stick to our original plan. Any advice helpful. Thank you.

Neuschwanstein from the outside is beautiful and makes for a great photo op and the area surrounding is pretty. But in my opinion, the castle inside is a big nothing and not interesting. It was disappointing. Search the forum and you will hear others opinions and suggestions about other castles in the area so that if you go you have more than one castle or places to visit in that area.

Since you are already day tripping to Stuttgart, and have such a minimal amount of time, I’d stay in Munich and explore it for the day. Otherwise you are spending all 3 days traveling to/from somewhere. Enjoy!

Nymphenburg Palace, the Residence and the Residence Museum are open on Mondays. The Technical Museum (Deutsches Museum) is also open on Mondays. That should be more than enough for one day.

It's going to take you 3+ hours each way to visit Stuttgart from Munich, and unless you plan on running through the Porsche and MBZ museums you can't see them both in one day. Plus they are not near each other and you need to plan 30-60 minutes between them. Forget Neuschwanstein and overnight in Stuttgart.

Unless you are really set on Stuttgart for the car museums, I would use that day and spend it local in Munich. Nymphenburg Palace and its grounds were absolutely gorgeous. If the car museums are a must, I would drop going to Neuschwanstein and stay local in Munich to visit Nymphenberg and other sites.

Personally we loved our day trip to Neuschwanstein which we did with Mike's Bike Tours (included transportation, biking to a lake, lunch, and the castle). The outside and especially the sight of the castle from Mary's Bridge was incredible. The inside was pretty, but a bit underwhelming.

I think Stuttgart is a nonnegotiable for my hub and kids who want to see the Porsche museum. All of the advice has been incredibly helpful. I think we will do local munich sites as recommended and see Neuschwanstein next trip.

I second the mention of the Technical Museum (Deutsches Museum). It was most excellent. Very large, one could spend a long day there. Easy to get to by bus.
And I also agree the Neuschwanstein Castle looks awesome from afar (or from the bridge), but inside was not so interesting.
I would add one museum in Munich, only if you have some outdoor-type hunters or fishermen. The Hunting and Fishing Museum is very close to the Marienplatz, just walk about 50 yards to the west, and it's on the North side. Not very big, lots of beautiful stuffed animals, fish, and some very ancient firearms on display. You could see it all in under an hour. Across from it is a good restaurant, Augustiner-Brau Ausshank.
