I’m looking at car rental in Munich either from near the train station or from a location more toward the perimeter of the city. We’re arriving on train from Salzburg and then driving to Fussen. I’ve read about the extra surcharge when renting near the train station. Wondering how convenience compares to getting out to one of the other rental locations though? When I look in Google maps it appears we’d need to take Sbahn and then most of them require a fair amount of walking (10+minutes) after exiting the S bahn. Not that that’s very far but we’ll have all our luggage on us. Recommendations?
Sixt and Europcar have pick-up locations in Freilassing, just across the border from Salzburg. Or try Autoeurope.
If you are dropping off anywhere in Munich, the drop-off fee is not exorbitant.
Sixt directly at train station München-Pasing shall be convenient for you. 11 minutes by S-Bahn from München Hbf. A 96 is in short reach.
Europcar has a station there in short walking distance.
Tip 1: buy the train tickets from Salzburg directly to station München-Pasing, so you do not have to care for local S-Bahn tickets.
Tip 2: you will need driving permission for Germany (not license only). So check validity of your foreign driving licence in Germany plus evtl. mandatory IDP.
Tip 3: book winter tires depending on season.
Tip 4: Before driving the first meter ensure that ALL existing damages and scratches in- and outside the car are listed in the handover protocol. If not, do not drive off until protocol is changed - otherwise you might pay the bill of others. Do photos around the car before driving and before / at return.
Thanks much for the responses. The Pasing location looks like the way to go for us.
