I am trying to figure out an itinerary for 3 days in Germany coming from Salzburg. On the 4th day in the afternoon we need to be in Frankfurt which we are driving to. If we have a car coming from Salzburg (dropping off in Salzburg and picking in Freilassing to avoid one way fee) it was suggested to see Berchtesgaden and Konigesse. From there where should we go or stay the night? We would like to spend one day in Munich but would it be too difficult to come in and out of the city with a car? Should we stay one night there or just see for the day and choose somewhere else to spend the night. Also interested in seeing or staying in a cute village.
You will have to pay for parking but it's not particularly difficult. Follow the signs to the center, when you get there follow signs for parking and just plan to walk from there. Alternatively, drop your bags at your lodging and ask them to recommend a place to park nearby. I wouldn't plan to use the car to get around Munich - just use public transportation or walk.
I agree with not picking up in one country and dropping in another. Sometimes you have to. If you have a choice, however, you can save a couple hundred dollars by dropping off and picking up on the other side of the border.
When we were in Munich with a car we drove to our hotel and dropped our bags. There was paid parking a block away. We didn't use the car all at to get around Munich.
