Munich best Neighborhood w/family?

What is the best neighborhood to stay in Munich w/family (husband and boys ages 7 yrs. and 9 yrs.)? We like to walk around and want to be conveniently located for sight seeing but not in the middle of an over run touristy area. We are going in late June 2016. We are not sure if we want a hotel or Airbnb/VRBO. We do not want tjo spend more than $250/per night. Thanks for any other tips.
Best Regards, Suzanne

For years, when I stayed in Munich, I stayed in a small hotel in the suburbs where I first stayed when I was booked there by the American company I worked for. It was about 20 minutes from Marienplatz on the S-Bahn. A few years ago, it was converted to apartments, and I couldn't stay there anymore. The next time I stayed at a hotel inside the old town, but it was still a 20 minute walk to Marienplatz.

What I am saying, is that you could stay in the suburbs and be outside the "over run touristy area", and still, if on an S-Bahn line, be close to town.

I haven't stay here yet, but the next time I am in Munich, I will try this place. It's a very short walk to the center of Munich and the price is right.

I would definitely recommend the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. It's simple, cheap, breakfast included, and just a few steps from the Viktualienmarkt and the Marienplatz. Quieter rooms are on the back side of the hotel.

Thanks. the Hotel am Vikualienmarkt and Pension Linder are booked. We want to stay in Munich. Any other suggestions for Hotel/Pension with air conditioning or good neighborhood to look for an apartment? Thanks, Suzanne

Haidhausen has lots of options. MK Hotel near Max Weber Platz has been recommended to me before.

In my experience, Munich does not often have days where air conditioning is required, so most places don't have it. You might have to go to a high end hotel like the Hilton or Marriot.

Hotel Torbrau which is also excellent location few steps from Viktualienmarkt is air-conditioned.

A Pension in Germany that would have air conditioning...forget it, unerhört. Staying at Pensionen means one is keeping the expenses down, not as if you're staying at a 4 or 5 start hotel. If you're considering staying at Pensionen in Munich, don't expect A/C to be available. If you want AC at a hotel, be prepared to pay for it. I wouldn't.

We stayed here with our 8 and 10 year old boys in 2014. We could walk to the beer garden and park, we walked to the science museum (can't remember the name)? There was a u bahn stop right on the corner for other jaunts. We really enjoyed it!

We used this guy:

Looks pretty booked up since it's so close to June, but he has more apartments in that building and elsewhere... not sure what your dates are exactly.

We stayed at the Santa Clara, but there are others in the building too. Why did I love the Santa Clara? One of the bathrooms had a urinal . I kid you not. I am dying to have one for my house - you have boys, you know why. :)

Side note: Take the Mike's Bikes tour to Neucshwanstein. (surely I spelled that wrong). Highlight of the trip for my boys!
