What's the best way to get to Munich to Bern by train? Are there discounted fares? I have a Swiss Pass Continuous Days that activates the day after we arrive in Bern. And, is it possible to add days to the Swiss Pass I bought because I purchased the insurance for it?
Just go to www.bahn.com and put your travel date and preferred time. You can get a Sparpreis ticket at a discount. It will be train specific for that particular train and date, refundable up to the day before for a 19 EUR fee. The discount will be the biggest if you buy now, or as soon as they go on sale. That discount is likely to trump any discount with a Swiss Travel Pass.
Edit - For Instance, for August 15, I see tickets available for 39.90 EUR. The fastest is actually to use the IC Bus from Munich Hackerbruecke bus station (near the Hauptbahnhof) to Zurich Sihlquaie bus station (near the Hauptbahnhof), then a train from Hauptbahnhof to Bern.
I have no idea about the Swiss Pass, but the usual way to buy international train tickets in Europe is to check the websites of the involved countries' national rail service - in this case, www.bahn.com and www.sbb.ch. You will usually have the choice between a flexible fare and a discounted fare, with the latter binding you to a specific train connection.
Thank you. I just purchased the tickets with the discount on the Bahn website.
