Munich, Berlin and best stops along the way

This is my first trip to Germany. I would like to go for 10-12 days. We would like to spend some time in Berlin and Munich. We are thinking of traveling by train from one city to the other with a couple of stops on the way. I read we should include Prague in one of the forums. Is this too much?

Well, if you can manage to make that 12 days, it might be doable. Remember that you will lose at least half a day, possibly more, each time you move around.

The other town well worth considering would be Dresden. And if you want some nature along the way, have a look at the Elbsandsteingebirge.

A lot of nice and interesting cities between Berlin and Munich. Leipzig is often overlooked. You can use it as a base for visiting Dresden or the other way around. Erfurt is well worth a visit, with Weimar and Gotha nearby. Bamberg is a beauty and can easily be combined with Nürnberg.

On the direct route are basically two regions: Thuringia and Franconia. Thuringia means Eastern Germany, Luther, Goethe and many cute little towns, Franconia means Bavaria, beer and basically "American Germany". In Thuringia you could visit Erfurt, Weimar and Wartburg castle, in Franconia Bamberg, Nuremberg and Rothenburg.
With a short detour you could also visit the Harz mountains or Saxonia. The Harz mountains were the medieval heart of Germany, and today the highlight are several completely preserved towns with literally thousands of half-timbered houses. Saxony is a mix of art, small-town Germany and nature. You can see the world-class museums of Dresden, do day trips to small towns like Meissen, Bautzen, Görlitz or Freiberg, or hike in Saxon Switzerland.
