Munich-Berchtesgaden-Salzburg + hiking

I'm going from Munich to Salzburg to Vienna the last week of April through May 18. I'm interested in day-hiking around Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, but prefer not to rent a car.
How many days in Berchtesgaden should I stay if I want to do, say, three hikes, or should I stay elsewhere and take a bus or train to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg?

How do I get to trailheads there?
Would anyone recommend a different place to hike in the area?

Berchtesgaden/Königssee

Years ago, we took the Jennerbahn to the middle station and hiked to the Königsbachalm and down to the Kessel Anlegeplatz. At the Kessel Anlegeplatz we put the colored panel out for the electric boat to pick us up. That was pretty neat. I'd check to see if the electric boats will still stop for you there.

Another good hike was in the Wimbachklamm from the Parkplatz Wimbachbrücke to the Wimbachgrieshütte and back.

Never been there, but always wanted to hike up to the Kührointhütte am Watzmann and on to the Archenkanzel for the view.

I would check to make sure the Alm and Hütte are open. Some do not open till end of May (Alpwirtschaft). Busses are running throughout the area. Staying in Schönau a. Königssee gives you good access.

A great hike is the two day hike up to the top of the Zugspitze near Garmisch. I did it twice years ago with a guide. You spend the night in a hutte for the overnight.
