Munich beer garden?

We will be in Munich mid-September and have a Monday night open. What are the recommendations for beer garden dinner? We like traditional German fare, and don't mine a sip of beer.

Thanks

Where are staying? Near the train station is the Augustiner beer garden. Farther west, towards Nymphenburg, is the Hirschgarten.

There is also the one in the Englischer Garten, though I’ve never been there.

We love the outdoor Beer Garden, Viktualienmarkt, near Marienplatz - so many food stands & a great setting.

It is closed on Sundays.

Given that you will be taking the train in, then the beer garden at the Augustiner Keller ( https://www.augustinerkeller.de/en ) is probably the best bet. Easy to get to, near the train station, and once there you have lots of choices.

The beer garden is huge, a serve yourself type affair (though at times they do some table service) and a decent choice of food in the beer garden. If you are lucky, there might be music, maybe not though on a Monday evening.

If you want something a bit more sit down, then you can eat in any of several venues on sight, from the cellar, to the big hall, a nice veranda. Again, which ones are open depends on what they think the crowds will be, but going to one of these will give you a wider menu.

Maisberger is actually in Neufahrn, which is 8 minutes by S-Bahn to Freising, where Weihenstephan, the world's oldest brewery, has an outdoor biergarten. I had dinner at the biergarten in 2012. Nice environment, fresh bier, and good biergarten food, and close to where you will be.

Augustiner Keller and Hirschgarten should be mandatory visits on any trip to Munich. My wife and I did both this past July. The food was outstanding both places. The beer is Augustiner brand (Munich‘s best). And Hirschgarten has a cute herd of deer! Go to both!

Augustiner Keller is my favourite as well, and definitely recommend checking out the beer garden at the Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten- they have food or you can just go for a drink.

We've stayed at the Hotel-Gasthof Maisberger, for two days prior to flying out. Nice hotel, large rooms, good food, and right next to the station. We took one day to take the train to Freising, then a bus to the Brewery. The tour took about 2 hours including all the tasting, was very interesting. And as mentioned, the restaurant was very good. My only concern would be that waiting for the bus, then the train, might get you back to Neufahrn kinda late.

And of all the good suggestions here, I'd choose the Englisher Garten, although it's a U-Bahn ride, and a good walk to get there.

All great suggestions, my preference would be in this order:

  • Augustiner Keller - great beer, decent food, if the weather is poor you are very close to the Augustiner Bräustuben (also worth a visit)
  • Hirschgarten - great beer again (Augustiner), amazing location, really a classic Biergarten

Best thing about the Viktualienmarkt is you can buy your food right there and take it in to the biergarten with you. Wider variety of selections and if you don't have a lot of time, it's probably the best place for people watching.

Get the book: "The Beer Drinkers Guide to Munich." Available on Amazon, a great guide and back stories too.

Best thing about the Viktualienmarkt is you can buy your food right there and take it in to the biergarten with you.

When we visited the Viktualienmarkt last summer, the bier garten had signage warning against bringing in "outside" food items, IOW food purchased from other kiosks. They want you eating their own food, which is not very good.

No one has mentioned the Hofbrauhaus, which is surprising. We had a wonderful time there shortly before Oktoberfest began. Good beer, very good food, good music, good Gemütlichkeit. Or as the Scots would say, good craic.

Like many others, I highly recommend Augustiner Keller. Great beer and food and just a couple blocks from the main train station..

I also really enjoy Weihenstephan brewery! Just be careful of their food. I went in March of 2023 and my order came with gravy all over the meat. When I started to eat it, I found LOTS of fat! My other meals there have been very good as they did not come covered in gravy. Augustiner is a great choice if you just want to stay close to the train station. If you go to Marienplatz, I would suggest Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal as they are not as touristy as Hofbrauhaus. It's right across the street from McDonald's just past altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall).
