Munich as a home base for day trips (3 full days)

We fly into Munich to board a Viking River cruise of the Danube. We will fly in 4 nights and 3 full days ahead of the boarding to spend time exploring some of Germany. I would like to keep Munich as our home base and take day trips out. Places we go to must be train accessible.

1? What kind of train passes are available for that period of time that might allow us the freedom to go anywhere during those days?

2? I am thinking of staying at a Movinpick hotel in Munich as I am familiar with them as a chain from other European travels. However, I would like to be close to the train station to leave the city. There might be other suggestions for hotel stays?

Thank you all for the time you give me to respond to my inquiry. I went to Switzerland in 2019 and suggestions made to me on this forum were wonderful. I hope I can give back suggestions from my trip there and in the future, my next trip to Germany. This will be in September.

This really depends on where you want to go but for most people either a Daily Regional Bayern Ticket (covers all of Bavaria including MVV, edit to add it does not include IC/EC/ICE fast trains) or a Daily Munich Transport Day ticket (covers the just the local MVV network).

Mövenpick is not really close to anything other than the airport (not even close to an S-Bahn station). I'd recommend staying in a Motel One near the city center (Sendlinger Tor) or near Munich Ost train station. This way you will have options for days trips and evenings out.

On weekdays the Bavaria ticket is only good after 9:00 AM ( all day on weekends ) and is not good on ICE,IC,EC trains. It is good for a trip to/from Salzburg

This may sound reasonable to you now, but the day trips most people want to take will involve many train hours per day (Neuschwanstein 5 hrs round trip; Salzburg nearly 4 hours round trip; Berchtesgaden 5 hours round trip.)

Other popular options that require less travel include Prien am Chiemsee (Herrenchiemsee Palace), Landshut, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Landsberg, Augsburg, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

My advice is to stay in Munich only as long as you need to see Munich - or not at all. I suggest you first determine your wish list for outings so that you can get better, more specific advice about where to stay and how to get to the places that interest you.

4 nights in either Berchtesgaden or Salzburg would provide access to both areas for some great sightseeing.
