Munich and surrounding area Sept 18 - 21

My husband and I will have a few days in Munich after a Danube river cruise. We chose Munich for the Oktoberfest, but we would love to fit in some other sites and activities. We are in our 50's and active. Interested in history (though not necessarily museums), and scenery, culture, food. Thinking of Dachau, and have seen some other suggestions here for Ammersee. Will likely use trains for visiting surrounding areas. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I, also, am not a museum person, but I have found a lot of thing to do and see right in Munich, including the "town center", Marienplatz, and Deutsches Museum, which is more about technology. Dachau, although of some interest, was not high on my list. I spent 16 nights in Munich before I finally went out to see Dachau. But Dachau only takes a half day, maximum; you have a few days.

After a few days just seeing the sight of Munich, you could venture out for a few day trips,

Any of the lakes south of Munich would be a good place for scenery. Beside Ammersee (the town of Dießsen and Andechs Monastery), there is Starnbergersee. A private rail line, Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) will take you from Munich to Hozkirchen and then to Teggernsee and Schliersee.

On, or just off, one of the main lines to Innsbruck are Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, and Seefeld.

If you want to see an authentic castle, the one at Burghausen is almost a thousand years old and takes about 2 hours to get to by train from Munich.

Normally I recommend Tegernsee over Ammersee. It's just as easy to get to (get a combo MVV inner ring+BOB ticket), there is a lot to see and do (boat ride, brewery, cycling, cable car up a mountain) and the surrounding scenery is better in my opinion (the start of the Alps).

If you do visit Tegernsee be aware there a half marathon race the morning of the 18th. It should not affect any transport to/from/around the lake but Gmund will be crowded with race goers and spectators from 9am until 2pm.

The BOB-MVV-Ticket, at 31€ for up to 5 people, is a better deal for three or more people, but a two person Bayern-Ticket, at 28€ is better for two people. The Bayern-Ticket covers all of the MVV, not just the inner zone (Innenraum).

Note: both the BOB-MVV-Ticket and the Bayern-Ticket allow you to use any conveyance of the MVV in the Innenraum to get to the Munich Hbf and the BOB train. If you were close enough to the Hbf, there is also a Guten-Tag-Ticket which would allow you to use the BOB from Munich Hbf to Tegernsee (any stop on the BOB) for only 26€ for two, but it does not include use of the MVV conveyances.

Also, the BOB-MVV-Ticket only covers the BOB in the outer three MVV zones (to Holzkirchen). The Bayern-Ticket allows you to use regional trains and the MVV S-Bahn (S3) to get to Holzkirchen.

Hi Alexandra- If you arrive Sat night, there is a nice parade for the Oktoberfest Sunday morning. It ends at the Oktoberfest grounds around noon. If the weather is nice, the 'fest will be very crowded on Sunday the 18th. . It will be easier to get around on Monday and Tuesday. Another suggestion for a day trip would be Herrenchiemsee. It is about an hour south of Munich at Prein. You take a boat from Prein to get to the palace in the middle of the lake. It's really very easy. If you are interested, Google the parade and Herrenchiemsee.

I am not a fan of Dachau- it might depress you for a day or so and ruin your short visit to the wonderful city of Munich.

Have a great trip!!! I'll save you a few biers at the 'Fest...
