Hello- I’d I would like to visit Munich, Rothenburg, Nuremberg, and Bamberg (primarily, with other side trips nearby) would Munich and Nuremberg be good towns to make my home base/sleep for a trip with no car and using trains?
The destinations Rothenburg and Bamberg make Nürnberg a far better base than Munich. Both are inside the VGN transport network and accessible with an cheap day ticket. I'd move to Munich thereafter.
Yes that was my thought- and why while originally just using Munich I think a second base in Nuremberg for the week makes sense
I agree with sla019. Do the north, and then move to Munich
Thank you yes the plan was always to visit those nearby towns via Nuremberg, the question was are Nuremberg and Munich the best “home base” towns to divide and efficiently see the area from, or am I missing an obvious town that would make for a better central base.
When I am in the southern area, I use Munich as more or less of a base. Besides, I like staying in Munich, either for westward or northward, eastward, etc day trips having anywhere from 30 mins to 120 minute radius. One day usually is set aside for that purpose. All traveling is done by train.
The last time I stayed in Nuremberg was 20 years ago. Aside from seeing the Zentrum again, I did a day trip to the Czech Rep, ie to Pilsen, by train, of course.
I am leaving for Germany in a week and will be basing myself in Nuremberg for four nights. I plan to take day trips to Bamberg and Regensburg (and possibly Coburg if I can squeeze it in). The train connections are good and quick. I've already been to Rothenburg, so don't feel the need to go back there. It's a very doable scenario.
Thank you - very helpful!
