I have one free day in Munich and am looking to go from Munich to Lake Chiemsee. It looks like the public transport is easy and much cheaper than a private guided tour. Is this area worth visiting with a leisurely day?. I would like to visit both the palace and the abbey and feel that both costs and pacing could be doable on our own. Other choices would be tour company trips to Neuschwansten or Rothenburg. I have visited both of these many years ago but daughter has not. Thought the Lake experience could be more relaxing on our own. Private tours are between $800-$1000 but looking at public transport looks very doable on our own at a fraction of the cost like $200 for both of us. Any comment or advice?
If you can use a Bayern Ticket (after 9 am weekdays), I'd say closer to $100 for 2 of you. Does not include lunch.
Two can get to Prien railway station from Munich and back on a Bayern Ticket (€39.)
From there it's €14.50 ea. round trip on a Kombiticket for a) tourist train to dock in Stock + b) boat to Herreninsel (where the palace is.)

It's €11 ea. for the palace tour.

So I think that's €90 total for two.
Thanks I think the trip looks very doable for us and so much cheaper on our own!
