Munich airport / train question

Howdy,
My wife and I will be flying from Houston to Munich (direct) overnight on 6/29 - 6/30 and I've got a couple questions.

  1. Once we land in Munich, we'll be jumping on a train to Graz, Austria. Our flight is scheduled to arrive in Munich at 9:50 am on 6/30. I'm looking up train tickets from Munich to Graz and it looks like they are scheduled every two hours. Do you think it would be ok to buy tickets to the train that leaves at 11:24 am? I'm a little worried that that train might not give us enough time to get off the plane, get luggage, clear customs and then get to the train terminal. There is another train at 1:24 pm that I'm sure we could catch, but I'm also not crazy about sitting in the airport for 2-3 hours waiting on it and then not getting in to Graz until 8:15pm that evening.

  2. Regardless of which train we choose, I see that there are two fares that are quite different in price. There's a "Savings Fare" that appears to not offer flexibility, and a "Flexpreis" that is over three times the price (58 euros vs 183 euros) that appears to be flexible in case we miss a connection. Any insight or suggestions on which way to go?

Thanks,
Brett

First, is there any reason you are not flying to Graz? Tickets are usually under $200/person and it saves a lot of time and hassle since you are at the airport already.

Our flight is scheduled to arrive in Munich at 9:50 am...Do you think it would be ok to buy tickets to the train that leaves at 11:24 am?

Trains from the airport are every 20min and they takes 40min to get to the main train station so plan for an hour to get from the airport to the city. That gives you roughly 30min to deplane (assuming you flight is on time), get through immigration, buy S-bahn tickets and get to the S-Bahn station. It is possible but that is a very tight connection and everything would have to work perfectly.

There is another train at 1:24 pm that I'm sure we could catch, but I'm also not crazy about sitting in the airport for 2-3 hours waiting on it and then not getting in to Graz until 8:15pm that evening.

The train to Graz doesn't leave from the airport. With that said I'd rather wait 2 hours at MUC than at the Hauptbahnhof of the Ostbahnhof. Just take a break at Airbraü in the big atrium between terminal 1 and terminal 2.

For you second question I'll let some more knowledgeable forum members comment.

Ok, I see what you are doing. Bahn.de gave you this itinerary:

München Flughafen T - München Hbf (tief)

Dep. 11:24
Arr. 12:05

S8 (S-Bahn train to the city)

München Hbf - Bischofshofen

Dep. 12:18
Arr. 14:52

EC 113

Bischofshofen - Graz Hbf

Dep. 15:13
Arr. 18:14

EC 163

Yes, you should be able to make this assuming you flight is not more than an hour late.

"Do you think it would be ok to buy tickets to the train that leaves at 11:24 am?" No. That's too snug. Any substantial delay and you miss the train - and forfeit the saver ticket.

"There is another train at 1:24 pm that I'm sure we could catch..."

I've had flight delays of more than 3 hours, cancellations as well... I wouldn't be nearly as sure as you are.

Also, 6+ hours on the train right after a transatlantic flight is somewhat rigorous.

I suggest you take the regional trains on a Bayern ticket (€28, buy it at the airport from a ticket machine, good whenever your flight dictates) to Salzburg and spend the night there.

Then... right now, anyway, you can buy a "Sparschein" ticket for July 1, Salzburg to Graz, 8:15-12:14, for €19 each at the Austrian Railways website

So that's €66 total for two on both journeys - no advance purchase needed and no risk that you'll have to forfeit the June 30 ticket because of a flight delay, no need to pay €183 for a full-priced ticket in case of delay - and only €38 risked for the pre-purchased Salzburg-Graz ticket on July 1 in the far less likely case of a flight cancellation with no replacement flight.

If you can get Munich to Graz included on you flight ticket, that would be the best solution. That way, if your arrival in Munich is delayed, they will just put you on the next flight to Graz, and there are several more that day. But that's too easy; you probably already thought of that. I suspect you are using United miles, and they don't include Graz. If you book Munich to Graz as a separate ticket, you'll have to retrieve your luggage and go through customs in Munich, then recheck your luggage. The airlines might not honor the Munich to Graz ticket if you miss your flight due to a late arrival in Munich.

Barring flying to Graz, I think Russ has a good alternative. Using a Bayern-Ticket to Salzburg gives you complete flexibility the first day, and spending the night in Salzburg breaks up an otherwise long train trip. You'll arrive in Graz at noon instead of 6 or 8 PM the previous day and really only miss the morning in Graz. Whenever you arrive at MUC, go to the S-Bahn station and buy a Bayern-Ticket. If you can't understand the ticket automat, you can buy it for 2€ more at the Bahn counter in the Munich Airport Center (MAC) upstairs or online. Take the S8 to the Munich East station (München Ostbahnhof). Note: the S1 will say it's destination is "München Ost", but that is it's final destination. It comes into town from the west and goes entirely through town to Ost. The S8 will say something like "Herrsching", but it comes into town from the east, goes to Ost, then goes entirely through the town and on to it's final destination. The S8 gets to Ost faster than the S1. At Ost, go out to track 8 and catch the next hourly regional (usually Meridian) train to Salzburg.

Another option, which I, myself, would use, if you can manipulate the Bahn website, would be to input from: Munich Airport T, to: Graz, with a stopover in Freilassing for 18:00. Since you are traveling the second day to Graz from Freilassing, which is across the river from Salzburg but still in Germany, the Bahn will offer you a 58€ (for 2) SparPreis fare for the Munich airport to Graz using EC111 from Freilassing at 9:51 to Bischofshofen, then IC 515 to Graz at 14:14. Because of the Bahn's Vor- und Nach-Lauf rule, you are not restricted to the specific regional trains on the ticket, but can use any regional train on that route all day on the 30th. The only specific trains are the EC to Bischofshofen and the IC to Graz.

Besides saving a few euro, this option would solve the problem of finding economical lodging within walking distance of the Hbf in Salzburg. I've stayed in Freilassing three times. The first time was here. Note: book directly. Booking.com is more expensive. Hotel Krone is a 6 minute walk (about 600 yds) from the train station via the tunnel under the tracks.

Another place in Freilassing is here. It's a little farther away (10 min walk) from the Bahnhof, but less expensive. It's essentially a restaurant with a few rooms to rent in back and upstairs. I've stayed there twice. It's nicer inside than it looks from the outside. The website is entirely in German, but Herr Chudoba speaks good English. Email him at [email protected]. If you want to go into Salzburg for the evening, a bus to the Altstadt stops on Muenchner Str, a block away from Hotel Rupertus. You won't find Hotel Rupertus on any booking website.
